Nomadic and Arab Islamic cultural significance has played an imperative role in shaping up the city of Hargeisa, Somaliland. With the incorporation of rich cultural and historical heritage, a daily affair of a book launch, poetry, or gig keeps the city alive and vibrant. However, it goes without saying, the city’s architecture takes center stage, which is well seen in the latest design of the Wave House.
East Africa-based, DO Architecture has designed the house as a physical representation that embraces the region’s landscape and hospitality in the most appropriate manner possible. The house is made specifically to serve as a private residence to a foreign returned family that holds culture and diversity dear.
Inspired by the gentle waves of the Gulf of Aden, the house acknowledges the ethos of Somali culture in its layout and plan. Yellow, the color of joy is seen wrapping the entire house. Catering to the inhabitants, the house has dedicated areas for cooking, sleeping, bathing, and also offers a courtyard with vegetation.
The exterior of Wave House is guarded with a periphery wall that runs across the entire structure to maintain privacy. The house plans to have the ground floor for guests with private areas while the stairs lead to bedrooms and praying on the top.

Upon entering the home, one can see a clear distinction of spaces within as per usage. Flanked by a living room, private studio, guest bedroom, and central courtyard, these areas are made for individual purposes. The main floor has a kitchen and an adjacent dining area that makes space for conversations and meal prep.
The top floor offers enchanting views in the form of a spacious and open rooftop, and has bedrooms, bathroom, and prayer area. The expansive bathroom with modern amenities serves the purpose well. Wide windows, doors, and open areas allow ventilation, light, and fresh air throughout the house. Wave House is a visually dynamic abode set in the costal landscape that reflects and respects the integrity of religion and place.
