Achieving recognition in the fiercely competitive industry, furniture designers typically combine utility and style in products highlighting their philosophy. However, for a selected few, ideating a concept holds more value and weight than the tangible creation itself. Since crafting is rarely linear, thorough experimentation with design and material often adds to the exciting journey in this case. One such example is the Sunroom Bench created using thoughtful production methods.
Crafted by Hungarian architecture and furniture designer Ákos Huber, the low-lying wooden bench is made for basking in the glory of its unsaid tale. Taking inspiration from nature and landscapes, Ákos’s designs speak a language often attributed to cultural diversity.
The Sunroom bench is shaped using a reclaimed Douglas fir tree highlighting a simple form. The wood used was conceptualized as structural beams/poles later to be realized into a wooden seating option. With a degree in Art and Design, Ákos’s dominance lies in adding the essence of handmade touch to all his sculptures. Hand tools and simple machines were meticulously used to refine the process to preserve the natural sheen of the wood buried under the coarse surface.

The Sunroom bench spells out irregularity in nature through its uneven yet visually striking color and grain patterns. Adding character to the bench is its long body crafted with unobscured imperfections on the surface using fire.
Crafted from a single piece of wood, its fabrication process speaks volumes about its physical solidity expressing the right balance between weight and space. A three-year-long development process has led to the actual realization of the product maintaining a uniform black finish. The bench can be used in outdoor and indoor settings, as an addition to a hallway, or at the end of a bed. You may visit the designer’s website for more information.
