American manufacturer of office furniture Steelcase has launched Karman, a uniquely designed mesh chair that naturally responds to the body’s movements, providing comfort in different sitting positions. The chair was unveiled in 2021 but has been released officially after two years of wait. Inspired by the Kármán Line, where the earth’s atmosphere meets space, the desk chair brings the concept of weightlessness into your home or office.
Enhanced with modern technologies and innovative materials, the Steelcase Karman office chair revolutionizes the traditional design and engineering of mesh chairs. The furniture piece boasts a weight-activated mechanism that intuitively responds to your body’s movements and shifting postures. The suspension seat with integrated cushioning delivers optimal support when working for extended periods.
There is a dial to customize the sitting experience with four recline positions. The dial can be adjusted in four recline positions while the armrests are also fully adjustable. Furthermore, the chair’s LiveBack technology harmoniously balances weight distribution while providing exceptional back support for unprecedented comfort.
The chair design is made using a combination of Intermix textile with a flexible frame that delivers the required tension to distribute the body weight evenly over the seat and back and adjusts with the contours of the body. There are no stiff edges, which means the users can comfortably sit in any way.
Mark Spoelhof, design director for Steelcase explained, “Comfort is built into every aspect of Steelcase Karman – it’s reactive to each body type and posture and adapts to all the different ways in which we might sit in a chair so you’re not aware of it, but it moves with you continually.”
