In modern times, many people frown upon using plastic because it does not score well on sustainability principles. But, we can’t deny its material strength and affordability aspect. Siqi Yang, a product designer based in Italy has come up with a unique-looking Spidique chair that explores the idea of using minimal plastic with the help of 3D-printing. Her design is the Silver A’ Design Award winner and is based on the philosophy that if plastic furniture production is carefully monitored, it can be an eco-friendly option.
Yang employed Ameba software and the BESO (Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization) algorithm to create a chair design that is lightweight and has exceptionally good structural integrity. To reduce the environmental impact of the building material, the designer has made it a point to minimize material use. With the help of computational design software, she could estimate the amount of plastic that would be good for creating a functional chair.
Post the design stage, the Spidique chair was fabricated using 3D-printing technology. The new-age manufacturing process helped in reducing the waste that is seen in the case of traditional furniture production. Yang did some research on the 3D printing tech which revealed that it reduces waste by 25% and even slashes the production time by a staggering 30%.

Talking about the look and feel, the Spidique chair is inspired by the works of legendary creators like Ross Lovegrove and Luigi Colani who are famous for forming organic shapes using technology. Following the same lines, Yang has created a chair with a skeletal appearance. The modern furniture piece looks extremely stylish in its minimal framework.
The 3D-printed plastic chair embraces the ground at five points, one at the back and two each on the right and left sides. The legs seem like branches of a tree, lending a unique sculptural form to the piece. The seat looks comfortable and has a curved design for good lumbar support. The backrest is shaped in such a way that it supports the spine, enabling a nice seating posture even for long periods.
