Iranian-French architect and designer India Mahdavi has created Smiley armchair in collaboration with Omer Arbel, co-founder of design brand Bocci and 22 System. In this affair of design, Arbel integrated the armchair with a myriad of his 22 System (suite of electrical devices) electrical sockets in fluorescent yellow. This collaboration redefines how electrical outlets shape interior spaces and can be an uplifting force behind interior design, imparting the space with color and personality.

The Smiley is one of the most interesting chair designs. But what makes the furniture fascinating are the sockets in a striking yellow shade that resemble the iconic smiley illustration by Harvey Ball. As a nod to the original, these sockets amplify the piece’s vibrancy and playfulness, making connecting with the world a joy.

The chair diverts from the ordinary, and instead of seeing the common utility as mere hidden fixtures, they are used as a fearless and expressive design element that add a pop of color or vibration to any room.

For this concept, Mahdavi reconsidered the design of her classic Oliver chair – boasting a compact and geometric design created for a London residential project – and transformed it into a multi-socket furniture, embellished with playful and vivacious spots. Thus, experimenting with an ordinary object reinvents the socket not only as a decorative piece but also as a functional and practical element.

“Smiley is about celebrating the small details that bring joy to our daily lives,” said India Mahdavi. Her reimagining of the electrical outlet as a decorative feature in a furniture is a way to inspire people to find beauty in the functional and familiar.

The Smiley armchair can do it all: You can sit and relax, all while enjoying its integrated power solutions. Not only this, you can plug-in many other everyday devices such as laptops, speakers, lamps and more, cultivating a versatile and tech-friendly environment in homes.
