The only reason why turntables are still relevant is purely due to their nostalgic appeal. The whole ritual of taking the record out of the sleeve and placing it on the turntable, positioning the tonearm, and aligning the stylus offers a unique gratification. While turntables are appreciated for their detailed sound, aesthetic contribution, and overall quality, the question is whether they still lure audiophiles today.
They definitely do, and so does Technics (brand name of hi-fi audio products owned by Panasonic Group) who are introducing a new high-end turntable to the market. Recently unveiled at IFA 2024, the SL-1300G turntable promises smoother rotation and enhanced vinyl playback clarity than its predecessors.
The biggest USP of the SL-1300G is the Delta Sigma Drive motor control software, which aims to mitigate minor vibrations that could affect platter performance. The SL-1300G also features a more advanced iron core-less motor that reduces cogging, ensuring smoother rotation and superior playback clarity. While the turntable’s technical aspect is drool-worthy, the design and finishing stand out as the real eye candy of the turntable.
The turntable is available in two colors: black and silver, each highlighted by a distinctive golden platter constructed with a brass top. Speaking of the platter, it is a little heavier courtesy of aluminum middle and rubber bottom layers, the latter offering maximum rigidity and dampening vibrations. The increased mass improves rotational accuracy and ensures precise tracking of vinyl records.
Additionally, a Multi-stage Silent Power Supply supports the turntable’s performance, similar to that in the SL-1000R (an old turntable in the company’s catalog). This system combines a high-speed, low-noise power supply with noise-canceling circuitry to achieve a very low noise floor and exceptional signal-to-noise ratio.
The SL-1300G turntable also retains the SL-1200GR2’s (its predecessor) S-shaped aluminum tonearm with high-precision bearings but does not include a cartridge, hence opening the room for customization.

However, SL-1300G does support electronic speed adjustments for 33 1/3 and 45 RPM records and includes a stop/start button. With so much to offer, no wonder today’s audiophiles are still drawn to Technics exceptional sound quality and aesthetic appeal. The SL-1300G will be available in December for $3300 at authorized Technics retailers or the company’s website.
