Samsung Electronics has unveiled the Less Microfiber Filter, an external washing machine filter designed to reduce plastic microfiber emissions during laundry cycles. Developed with outdoor clothing company Patagonia and non-profit organization Ocean Wise, this filter builds on the success of last year’s Less Microfiber Cycle, offering a sustainable solution for laundry washing. Initially available in Korea and the U.K., it will launch in other countries later this year.
Moohyung Lee, the Executive VP of R&D at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the need to address microplastic pollution: “With microplastic emissions into our oceans rising and regulations becoming stricter worldwide, Samsung, in partnership with Ocean Wise and Patagonia, has engineered technology to prevent microplastics’ release in our daily lives. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber™ Filter and Cycle, Samsung aims to make eco-conscious practices second nature and enable sustainability.”
Samsung’s journey in reducing microplastic emissions started with the Less Microfiber Cycle, which uses Ecobubble technology to reduce microplastic shedding by 54%. The Less Microfiber Filter goes further, preventing up to 98% of microplastics from escaping during laundry. This reduction is equivalent to avoiding eight 500ml plastic bottles per year from reaching oceans and other waterways when the filter is used four times a week. The mountable design promotes long-term sustainability and compatibility with standard washing machines.

The Less Microfiber Filter is manufactured using recycled plastics, ensuring sustainability throughout its lifecycle. Equipped with blades that capture microplastics using a 65-70 micrometer wide mesh, the filter requires cleaning once a month. Integration with Samsung’s SmartThings platform provides real-time fill-level information and sends notifications for cleaning or troubleshooting. The Less Microfiber Cycle, available on select Samsung washing machines since 2022, can be activated with a press of a button. This feature will expand to previous Wi-Fi-enabled models via an update.
The Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter represent Samsung’s commitment to sustainability. Vincent Stanley, Director of Philosophy at Patagonia, expressed optimism for future collaborations by saying, “Samsung and Patagonia’s joint endeavor to reduce microplastic emissions into oceans does not conclude here. We look forward to developing further projects with industry partners, creating solutions to combat marine pollution.”
