We are so dependent on apps that we cannot think of a gadget to be what it is without the software combinations running through its veins. That is not how Rabbit – a tech startup – believes the future should be with the advent of AI at least. To that end, the company has brought to CES a pioneering new gadget called the R1. Powered by AI, this companion device analyses and responds to user commands without any application or smartphone connection.
The Rabbit R1 is a pocket-size, orange-colored device made in collaboration with Teenage Engineering. It takes up a few sends to process the information you feed to it at the press of a button and uses interfaces or scripts called “rabbits” to execute the task it has learned.
According to press info, the R1 is more than a regular assistant device or a smart speaker that relies on various applications to carry out your tasks. Powered by Rabbit OS, the square-shaped R1 can handle more complex tasks without an app but using natural language commands. For instance, it can research booking facilities for your next trip or fill up the virtual grocery list and check out from the cart with just your command and no human intervention.
For this level of ease, the R1 comes with something called the Large Action Model (LAM) that streamlines complex tasks fed to the device by regularly learning and replicating user actions across different platforms. This therefore eliminates the need for API integrations and apps; the device can natively execute tasks across platforms.

The inventive device comes with a 2.88-inch touchscreen and a scroll wheel for navigation. The camera named “rabbit eye” sits on the left top corner of the R1 and is capable of 360-degree rotation during video calls. A push-to-talk button is the highlight of this standalone device that runs on Wi-Fi and SIM card for hassle-free performance.
The Rabbit R1 draws power from a MediaTek Helio P35 processor and has 4GB RAM and 128GB storage to go with it. The built-in rechargeable lithium battery of this device is powered through a USB-C port. The R1 is by virtue a security-first device, which doesn’t stoop on your privacy at any time. The microphone and camera onboard are only activated when you initiate an interaction by pressing the push-to-talk button. Starting at $199, the Rabbit R1 is expected to be available for purchase in March-April 2024.
