UK-based LAYER design studio is well-known for working with innovative materials. Previously, the studio created the Vale chair from recycled plastic bottles, and now, it has designed a chair using a single sheet of 3D-Veneer timber for MDF Italia. Dubbed the Press chair, the furniture design features contoured lines and a comforting form for timeless appeal.
The LAYER team spent two years developing the chair, using 3D CAD technology and creating various scale models to realize the seat’s complex curvature. The use of 3D-Veneer also helped design and produce the organic shape of the sleek piece of furniture. “When working with any material,” comments designer Benjamin Hubert, “we like to push its potential to the maximum.”
The name itself is derived from the production process that creates complex shapes from a three-dimensional veneer. The method involves a two-part aluminum mold that presses the innovative timber material into the organic 3D seat form. This results in the Press Chair with a gentle curvature that ensures both visual and physical sense of comfort.
The chair design not only showcases the design capabilities of 3D-Veneer but creates additional comfort for the user with a curved seat form. Owing to its smooth and seamless shell, it will fit in with any interior setting.

The chair is made of beech plywood in bleached and black-stained finishes or Canaletto walnut veneer. On the other hand, the legs can be chosen from a range of styles, including a stacking steel tube leg, laminated plywood legs, and a central stem steel butterfly base.
The Press Chair was launched at Salone del Mobile in Milan earlier this year.
