Most of the garbage generated in our kitchen is dumped into landfills to slowly rot. Pela, known for making the world’s first compostable phone cases, is now offering us an effective solution to get rid of kitchen waste with a purpose.
Pela has unveiled Lomi, a kitchen appliance that turns food waste into compost within 24 hours. Lomi can decompose vegetables, fruits, animal products, food, yard waste, and bioplastics to produce nutrient-rich and ready-to-use compost. For this, Lomi uses heat, abstraction and oxygen. The compost can be used for indoor as well as outdoor flowers and plants alike.
Just like earthworms break down and mix plant tissues in the soil; Lomi speeds up the breakdown of food waste into fragmented biomass without creating any mess and stinking odor. The fragmented biomass then provides more surface area for the growth of microbes, thus accelerating the process of composting. Finally, it produces natural soil amendment as the end product. It becomes the source of soil micronutrients and macronutrients and increases the organic content of the soil.
Lomi comes with three modes that allow you to choose its speed and the type of nutrient content you want. Its eco mode turns waste into nutrient-rich compost that is perfect for your plants. Express mode lets you get rid of food waste quickly as it rapidly breaks down the waste and reduces its volume up to 80-percent. Last but not least is bioplastic mode that breaks down certified compostable plastics and turns them into usable compost.
Lomi is equipped with stainless steel, dishwasher safe, bucket and a pair of charcoal filters to help break down waste without much noise. The outer body of Lomi has a button to start the composting process – this button also allows you to toggle through its three modes.

Lomi is a compact unit; it comes in a size of a bread maker and can hold up to 3 liters of waste. It is equipped with filters with activated charcoal (easily replaceable) that traps and eliminates odors produced during the composting process so it can be kept in the kitchen without a fuss.
As per Pela, Lomi can help reduce up to 50-percent of waste that’s dumped into the landfills and help reduce our carbon footprint. Lomi is available for pre-order on Indiegogo for a special offer discount of $379.
Updated: The Lomi food composter is now available on Amazon.
