Spanish designer and architect Patricia Urquiola is well-known in the design industry, with inspirational and unique projects to her name. Recently, she designed a series of high and low round tables for Italian furniture brand Glas Italia. Dubbed the Babar tables, Urquiola employed 100-percent recycled glass grit and glass shards for these handmade tables to give them an organic appearance.
The furniture pieces exhibit simplicity in their form and design. Seemingly, it was inspired by the traditional stone furniture prominent in Asia and Europe that were mostly used for outdoor settings like gardens and royal buildings.
The big Babar table has three legs while the smaller version is supported by just one leg, making it look like a stool. They even look like pillars supporting the sleek round top. Keeping easy assembly and dismantling in mind, the designer has used detachable legs that can be effortlessly joined by a system of metal plates.
It is interesting to see how such extraordinary furniture objects have been created with sustainability at the core. The recycled materials not only make the table eco-friendly, but prove how design can consciously turn one man’s waste into another’s treasure.
“The Babar tables present an irregular surface and geometry, featuring an organic and unique appearance”, Patricia stated in one of her Instagram posts where she shared a short video of her creations. Featuring pastel color palette, the Babar tables are available in ice, jade, clay, honey, and lavender colors, which are always slightly varying and heterogenous thanks to the handcrafting.
The Babar tables can be used for different purposes since they come in different sizes and heights. They can be used in the living room, outdoors (since they are waterproof), and dining area.
