One Side Sawn coffee table is an intriguing piece of furniture crafted by the Amsterdam-based Studio ThusThat for its latest One Side Sawn collection. The design firm has upcycled the most taken-for-granted material, aluminum, in an ingenious way to produce this exquisite furniture collection. The coffee table is a furniture piece carved from a single block of aluminum (crust) retrieved directly from the smelters.
Aluminum is one of the secondary and the most overlooked materials. However, the designers have found the cleverest way to use this understated element to make some interesting interior objects like shelves, cabinets, flat-pack tables, and accessories. These in their natural form and quality are made from the early stages byproduct of aluminium production.
Aluminum goes through a long and strenuous journey before becoming the desired product. It is carved into rough blocks before reaching the factory for processing. These blocks are further cut into pieces, known as crusts, which are generally considered waste. However, the Studio ThusThat has found a way to use these leftovers most efficiently.
The designers have kept the crusts as raw as possible and have not put them through a lot of refinement to show the importance of aluminum’s naturalness. Forwarding with the approach, the designers have left the bumpiness and roughness untouched to make its undulating texture more noticeable. The coffee table has a similar uneven configuration which is further accentuated by the undergone industrial mechanism.

One of the most highlighting aspects of the coffee table is its unrefined and shapeless structure which gives it the most unique look. However, with its aesthetic appeal, it makes for a great décor item for your home. The recycling of the aluminum crusts to create interior objects stresses the importance of an everyday material, and how these discarded elements can be turned into fascinating everyday pieces.
There are other eclectic and thought-provoking pieces from the One Side Sawn collection (mentioned above), which have gone through a similar industrial process of shaping and crafting. At this point, the collection of aluminum furniture is a proof of concept of the material usage. The pricing and availability are not clearly mentioned on the studio’s website.
