Brett is a rural firefighter in Ottawa. He recently built an extra-small, modern tiny house with interesting furnishing solutions to maximize the limited footprint. The micro-dwelling can fit in a lot of different landscapes without posing any threat to the environment. It has an intriguing open-plan layout that cleverly tackles space constraints with a Murphy bed and collapsible furniture.
This tiny house measures 16 feet long and 10 feet wide and has steel and treated pine board and batten siding on the exterior with a shed-style slanted roof. Currently, the house sits on a deck block but can be placed on a trailer for mobility, although you will need special permits to take it out on the road due to its width. There is not much in the prospect of natural light and ventilation save for a glass front door and a back window.
Its interior is contemporary, fully functional, and insulated, with a raw wood look. Although it is compact, it manages to seamlessly include a large bathroom, a full kitchen, and a versatile living room pulling double duty as a bedroom. Upon entering, there is a small spot for shoes and hooks on the other side for hanging jackets and such. Brett intentionally left a bit of floor and wall space for people to use however they see fit. An air conditioner for heating and cooling hangs above the entrance.
A snug kitchen is near the entrance and has a countertop with a sink, a cooktop, an air-fryer, a shelf for hanging pots, an under-counter cabinet with a tankless hot water system, and room for storing garbage disposal. Two large cabinets are installed next to the countertop for storing various items. Notably, it is the only storage space in the house.
Across the kitchen, there is a bathroom and a toilet. The bathroom is spacious and feels luxurious with a glass door and LED backlight in the niche for a cool feature. All the lights in the bathroom are controlled by a custom post built by Brett and his friends. There is an incinerating toilet, separated by a glass screen. The glass screens can be tinted and frosted for more privacy. The use of glass here creates a spacious feel, unlike wood, which would have caused it to seem even smaller.

At the rear, there is a living room and bedroom. It is a versatile space and accommodates collapsible furniture to make it a hangout space. For sleeping, a double Murphy bed for two can be safely pulled down and you get to store the collapsible furniture under it without having to move it around. There is a tiny cubby at the bedside for your phones and charger, and a wall-mounted TV for entertainment. In one corner of the room, there is a vanity sink as well.
This ultra-compact modern tiny house is perfect as a cozy weekend getaway for one or two people, a bachelor pad, or a peaceful student rental. Thoughtfully built, the house is up for grabs on Facebook Marketplace for CAD 67,000 (roughly $48,000).
