Humans are capable of profound compassion if only we get out of our heads and take care of each other – be it humans, or any other species. A family in Frazee, Minnesota, showed such kindness by building a multi-level heated cat condo for a family of strays in their backyard. Kevin, Jill, and Ashley Mohn found a feral pregnant cat in their yard in 2023. The Mohn family named the mother Such-a-good-mama and her offspring Lila, Lucy, and Larry when they were born in the fall.
Kevin told Valley News Live, “Basically starving to death, and I gave her a can of cat food, and she inhaled it. And low and behold, over the edge of the crick over there, we have seen three round heads and six round eyeballs popping up over there.”
The gesture of kindness from one species to another almost three years ago. It has now become a family of over 8,000 people on the YouTube channel Up North Cat Condo where the Mohn family has been live-streaming the heated cat condo since December 2024. You can spot the tabby mother with white under her chin and on the chest; Lucy is white with black spots, Lila has a tortoiseshell shade with a white belly, and Larry is white with gray spots.
Kevin converted the dog house into this two-story condo for the cats and outfitted it with heating, decorative lights, and a mouse poster to keep the felines cozy and amused. The ceramic bulbs keep the cat condo heated and snug for the budding family. He converted the dog house into this two-story condo for the cats. There is insulation, food, water, and blankets to make it a nice haven.
His daughter posted a photo of the condo on Facebook in November last year. The post gained half a million views quickly. Soon, the family set up a 24-hour live stream to indulge strangers on the Internet with kittens’ playful shenanigans. You can live-stream this personal castle of the felines 24/7 to give yourself a dose of serotonin.
“It kind of got a hold of me, I just wanted to keep adding things. We got it functional before the weather got too cold, that was the goal. It has heating and lights, although there are some things to improve on, but it’s been really, really fun so far…You see a paw or somebody stretching or licking each other, the temperature says it is 75 and it is zero or above outside, it was kind of an unexpected feel-good situation. It took me by surprise how pleasurable it was to see them comfortable and safe,” Kevin told MPR News.

Kevin has grown fond of these felines. Sometimes, he gets up in the middle of the night to check on the cats outside his window. But he is not alone. Many people have found solace and a shred of happiness watching these felines so cozy in their heated cat house.
Kevin’s daughter Ashley shared with MPR News that people from around the world have been sending her pictures of their own cats watching the livestream and reacting to it. Some fans analyze cats’ behavior, while others share tidbits about their own lives and how the livestream has helped them.
Ashley even shared the story of a viewer. “He was talking, we had no idea what his story was and then he was like ‘my cancer came back, and I have to start treatment again but this is giving me hope, and I can keep going because I want to keep watching these cats.’ I was like holy crap, you just get goosebumps. It’s insane, it’s awesome.”
This heartwarming story of the Mohn family and their adopted felines living in the heated cat condo is one of compassion, love, and everything good about humanity. It has not only saved a cat family from dying out in the cold but also provided happiness to strangers around the world. That is the power of kindness!
