Xincheng Jiang, a student at the Tongji University one day decided to craft a chair that could be a nurturing space for meditators and healers. Out of this was born the Meditation chair. It is made from discarded materials, perfected with technical precision that bridges the gap between natural world and the world of technology. As the name implies, the chair is intended for meditation with its comfortable seat that mirror the contours of the body.

The use of discarded materials make the design more appealing. Its seat surface is made from soft white spruce plywood, giving a textural quality, while its organic legs are formed with recycled balsam fir branches, addressing the rawness and chaotic side of nature. The digital fabrication plays a pivotal role in bringing the product to life, by using machines to seamlessly cut and carve through the irregular shapes of the material.

For nurturing a healthy mind and body, it intendedly becomes a designated spot for meditation with the surface contours mirroring the contours of a cross-legged sitting posture allowing you to sit comfortably and meditate in peace. If you are a dedicated meditator, then placing it indoors in a quiet room with good light and outdoor view, you can create a Zen space that brings healing and relaxation.

You are wondering if it can also be used as a normal chair, it probably will not be suited for that. It doesn’t seem to be designed to be seated other than cross-legged and may not support any other sitting position. The legs are asymmetrical and partially touch the ground, so it might not be able to hold your body weight if you sit as you would in a chair, and chances are, it could tumble to any side.

Moreover, the reclining backrest is doesn’t look very comfortable to sit in a relaxing posture. It will only strain your back and bring discomfort. So, it is better if the chair is used for meditation purpose only, as sitting cross-legged will have your weight distributed proportionately and you will be able to get the best out of it.

Beautifully marrying the rawness and simplicity of natural material with the modern technology, the designer highlights the harmonious relationship between man and nature through the Meditation chair. By giving new life to discarded materials, it reflects the sustainable and eco-conscious mindset of the designer.
