Stockholm Design Week 2024 has many interesting designs and innovations. One that is impressive and environment-friendly is the launch of Mat chairs – which are made from bio-based materials – by Denmark-based design brand, Normann Copenhagen. Mat chairs use hemp and eelgrass as the basic building material. It is the result of years of research and development by the design duo Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen who partnered with Normann Copenhagen to bring this furniture to life.
The Mat collection offers two kinds of chairs. One is created using hemp and another one using eelgrass. The legs of the chairs are created using powder-coated steel. The natural tone of the biomaterials gives a characteristic color to the chairs. The hemp chairs look golden and the eelgrass chairs are brown.
The Danish brand is making its debut in the realm of bio-based plastics with the Mat chairs and it highlights their commitment to come up with new and innovative production methods as stated by Jan Anderson, the co-founder and CEO of the company.
The project conceived by Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen took more than 20 years to get into production. The idea was conceptualized by Peter Hiort-Lorenzen, the co-founder of Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen. He wanted to substitute plastic in the furniture industry with plant-based fibers. The initial prototypes were created in 2005 but the use of hemp as building material was started in 2008. The hemp material used in the case of Mat chairs is sturdier and more appealing compared to the earlier prototypes.

One interesting fact about the raw materials used in these chairs is that they have been sourced from farms that usually consider it a waste product. The Mat eelgrass chair also uses hemp fibers combined with dried seagrass. Both materials are converted into sheets which are thereafter given the desired shape using a compression machine.
Mat chairs are versatile and can be used as dining chairs or bar stools. They are even fit to be used in workspaces. The chairs will look great with or without upholstery.
