Jonathan Ive once said, “It’s very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better.” Putting his money where his mouth is, the former Apple chief designer has ‘respectfully and gently’ built on the 50-year-old Linn Sondek LP12 turntable to make it look and sound better than previous tweaks to the classic music player in five decades.
This is Jony Ive’s (as Steve Jobs called him) first foray into product design (since leaving Apple to create LoveFrom) and the first music player, after designing the Apple iPod in the beginning of this millennium.
While the aesthetics of this turntable, launched first in 1972 by British audio brand Linn, remain unchanged; the collaborative design alteration, pulled out by Linn and LoveForm, is worth recognition. The two founders – Ive and Linn’s Gilad Tiefenbrun – got together into thinking about a new way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Linn and the Sondek LP12 and eventually arrived at the strictly limited edition, 50th-anniversary version of the revered Hi-Fi turntable called the Sondek LP12-50.
The interesting partnership is result of sheer admiration for musical perfection alone. For the shared value of design excellence and attention to detail, Ive has toggled with the primary switch of the Sondek LP12-50 to render it more circular and flatter, while the board under the arm has been rounded off to match the design language.

The hinges and dust cover are slightly tweaked and most interesting rework is on the plinth, which is manufactured from single block of wood. The new manufacturing approach adds acoustic brilliance to the vinyl playback in this new anniversary edition model.
