Renowned architect Arthur Dyson – an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright – is famous for his organic architecture that blends with natural surroundings seamlessly. He is known for designing many houses in California’s Sierra Mountains, including the Creek House and Lapp RiverHouse. Sitting alongside the Kings River near Sanger, about 30 miles east of Fresno, the two-bedroom Lapp RiverHouse is listed for $2.3 million.
The Lapp RiverHouse bears hints of the designer’s signature organic style and is a brilliant collaboration between Dyson and the sellers, Deborah and Greg Lapp. The Lapps, a writer and a composer, chanced upon the land while kayaking down the river and soon worked to acquire it.
Deborah had worked with Dyson before on the Creek House with her late husband, Dennis. She knew Dyson’s creative and imaginative bend as an architect and was sure that he’d be the right fit for the new project. The Lapps wanted Dyson to build a house that plays with the natural landscape, which appears to be carved by river and ridge.
The curvilinear design of the house mimics the rolling hills of the surroundings. It further harmonizes with nature through its many sustainable and energy-efficient features. The double-paned windows, deep overhangs, and passive cooling techniques.
Another thing that was important for the couple was to be able to enjoy the natural surroundings from within the house. Dyson made it possible with floor-to-ceiling windows in the great room and primary bedroom, both of which facilitate beautiful vistas of the Kings River and the Sierra Foothills.
The great room includes the living and dining areas, and a kitchen with a circular island. The space has big floor-to-ceiling windows that bring plenty of natural light inside.

A cozy den with a TV and wall shelving is hidden behind sliding wood doors. The primary bedroom is equipped with built-in shelving, adjoined by a grayscale bathroom where windows by the shower look out to the river. The Lapp RiverHouse even has a wine room and a laundry room.
The house has an oval pool outside with a lounge space and a second outdoor seating area with a fire pit. A covered patio has room for al-fresco dining. The upstairs has been turned into an apartment-like space with two beds, a built-in desk, and a kitchenette.
