Drinking tea has always been a pivotal tradition throughout history. This tradition still continues due to intriguing conversations and stories revealed while drinking tea. Unfortunately, this tradition is losing its essence due to physical proximity or busy schedules. To that accord, Kevin Tang has designed the AI-powered gpTea set that enables us to share stories with our friends and loved ones miles away. The gpTea uses the LLM (large language model) AI program in its objects that interprets human language and answers questions in a conversational manner.
The gpTea consists of three parts: the cup, the tray and the teapot. The cup has a 1.28-inch round display, featuring an ESP32 microcontroller, microphone and 1 liPo battery. The body of the cup has a magnifying lens in its geometry, which blends the generated photograph display into the liquid content once the cup is filled.
Its tray has a speaker, a stepper motor rotating the teapot via a timing belt, and a rotary encoder equipped with two haptic motors for user feedback. Moreover, it incorporates a Hall effect sensor that produces sound if someone lifts it, displaying a blinking red audio recording light. All the electronics in the tray are connected with an arduino nano microcontroller.
The gpTea set is a full-stack application that has a React frontend and Express server through both wireless and serial port connection. It is further aligned with the MongoDB database to store and retrieve stories you share during tea time. The application is integrated with API endpoints enabling the teacup to fetch images and effects wirelessly.
You can call or video chat with people around the globe anytime. However, there is a nostalgic aspect of gpTea that continues the teatime rituals even from miles away without having to poke at your phone screens.
The entire process involved in its preparation for tea entails storytelling- where pouring tea symbolizes sharing the story, and drinking highlights the user’s absorption of that story. With gpTea, stay connected with your friends and loved ones by sharing and absorbing stories while enjoying your tea.
