The American tiny house movement started with affordability and downsizing as founding pillars, but somewhat diverged toward expansive and high-end dwellings in the recent decade. However, one builder stuck to his guns and commitment to building affordable, customizable tiny homes to help people escape the burden of high mortgages or rent. That builder is Randy Jones, founder of Incredible Tiny Homes.
Aptly named, Incredible Tiny Homes offers excellent living solutions starting from $18,000, which in an industry that can cost upward of $200K per dwelling, is no small feat. Recently, Randy and his team partnered with Lowe’s for a humanitarian project to provide tiny homes for people who lost their residences during Hurricane Helene. We contacted Randy to learn more about this collaboration, his company, and the driving force behind his passion. Read on to learn more about the insightful conversation with the founder of Incredible Tiny Homes.
Homecrux (HC): Can you tell us why you got into building tiny houses?
Randy Jones (RJ): Incredible Tiny Homes in Newport, TN, is known for my passion for building affordable, customizable tiny homes. My journey into the tiny home industry began with a desire to provide people with a simpler, more affordable way of living. My focus was on creating homes that were functional, beautiful, and accessible to those who might otherwise be priced out of traditional housing.
I was inspired by the growing tiny house movement and the freedom it offered people to downsize their lives and escape the burden of high mortgages or rent. With a background in construction and design, I saw an opportunity to bring my expertise to the industry and help others achieve financial independence while living in thoughtfully crafted, small spaces.
My philosophy revolves around providing high-quality craftsmanship at an affordable price, which sets us apart in the tiny house community. My mission has been to make homeownership attainable for as many people as possible, which is why my company often offers innovative financing options and budget-friendly designs.

HC: How has the journey been so far?
RJ: It has been a remarkable journey in the tiny home industry. Starting with limited resources, over the past ten years, my company has built over 1,000 tiny homes, established four tiny house communities, with more under development, and provided employment opportunities for hundreds of individuals.
A significant milestone in this journey was the transformation of an old tire factory site in Newport into a thriving tiny home community. Initially deemed unsuitable, this area now hosts 230 tiny houses, complete with safe water, electricity, and sewer systems, thanks to collaboration with local authorities.
Our commitment to affordability and sustainability is evident in our designs, such as the “Incred-I-Box,” an 8-by-16-foot tiny home model starting at $18,000. This model has not only made tiny home living more accessible but also facilitated acts of kindness, like providing homes to individuals who lost everything during natural disasters. Most recently I worked with Lowe’s to donate 50 Incredible Tiny Homes to Carolina families waiting for rebuilt housing after hurricane flooding, after losing everything.
Throughout this journey, I have remained dedicated to making homeownership attainable for many, emphasizing quality craftsmanship and community development. My innovative approach continues to inspire and shape the future of affordable housing.

HC: What is your favorite part of building micro-dwellings?
RJ: I often share my passion for building micro-dwellings, and my favorite part seems to revolve around a few key elements:
- Transforming Lives: I often emphasize how tiny homes empower people to live debt-free and embrace a simpler lifestyle. I find joy in knowing that our work helps people achieve financial freedom and a sense of security that traditional housing might not provide.
- Creativity and Customization: Designing and building tiny homes allows me to tap into the creative side. I love the challenge of making small spaces functional, beautiful, and tailored to the unique needs of each customer.
- Building Community: I take pride in fostering a sense of community through our tiny home neighborhoods. I often talk about how these communities bring people together and create opportunities for connection in ways that larger housing developments might not.
- Inspiring Sustainability: A big part of our mission is promoting environmentally conscious living. I enjoy knowing that the homes we build encourage sustainable practices, from downsizing material consumption to lowering energy use.
- Journey with Customers: I value the relationships we build with the clients throughout the process. I often highlight how rewarding it is to see the excitement and gratitude of homeowners when their tiny home dreams become a reality.

HC: Do you ever do custom builds? How do you align your vision and the client’s vision?
RJ: Incredible Tiny Homes is well known for offering both custom-built tiny homes and innovative models like the budget-friendly “Incred-I-Box.” I have spoken often about the joy and challenges of custom-building, which allows us to work closely with clients to bring their unique visions to life. Here’s how we ensure the client’s vision aligns with the final design:
- Open Communication: Incredible Tiny Homes prioritizes understanding the client’s needs and dreams for their tiny home. Through initial consultations, we listen carefully to their ideas, goals, and must-haves.
- Education: I and my team share our expertise on the practicalities of building tiny homes. This helps clients understand how to maximize limited space, prioritize essential features, and stay within budget while ensuring the design remains functional and livable.
- Visualization Tools: Incredible Tiny Homes provides sketches, mock-ups, and sometimes virtual walkthroughs to help clients see how their ideas will look. This helps refine the design collaboratively before construction begins.
- Balancing Creativity with Feasibility: We balance creative input with the client’s preferences. For example, if a client wants a feature that might not work structurally or functionally in a tiny space, we offer alternatives that achieve the same purpose but are more practical or affordable.
- Transparency: Throughout the process, I and my team maintain clear communication about timelines, costs, and construction progress to ensure the client feels involved and confident in the build.
- Personal Touch: We enjoy adding personalized, thoughtful touches to each build. Whether it’s a custom storage solution, a unique aesthetic element, or a quirky detail, we ensure the home reflects the client’s personality.
HC: What makes Incredible Tiny Homes custom builds unique?
RJ: Incredible Tiny Homes’ extensive experience in construction, combined with our focus on affordability and functionality, allows us to create homes that are not just beautiful but also practical and livable. Our passion for helping people achieve their dream of owning a tiny home drives every custom project.

HC: You recently collaborated with Lowe’s to build tiny houses for people who lost their homes during Hurricane Helene. How did you get into the mix and how was the experience?
RJ: Yes, Incredible Tiny Homes collaborated with Lowe’s to provide tiny homes for individuals who lost their residences during Hurricane Helene. The partnership emerged when Lowe’s Senior Director of Community Relations, Julie Yenichek, proposed the idea of building tiny homes to her friend, Charlotte-based home builder Danny Kelly. Recognizing the potential impact, Kelly connected with me and Amanda Hayes, and we were eager to contribute to the relief efforts.
Incredible Tiny Homes played a significant role by constructing 50 of the 100 tiny homes funded by Lowe’s. These homes, measuring 8 feet by 16 feet and permanently fixed on wheels, are equipped with essentials such as heating, a kitchen, a bathroom, and sleeping arrangements for three to four individuals. This initiative allowed families to remain on their land while rebuilding their permanent homes.
The experience was profoundly meaningful for me and my team. Witnessing the devastation in our community, we felt compelled to assist. The collaboration with Lowe’s enabled us to rapidly provide housing solutions to those in need. This partnership not only provided immediate relief to affected families but also reinforced the importance of community collaboration in times of crisis.
Amanda Hayes stated, “We’re so proud of Lowe’s and so grateful to Lowe’s for letting us be a part of this.”

HC: Where do you see the tiny house industry 10 years from now in the US?
RJ: I have shared insights into the potential growth of the tiny house industry, and my vision aligns with broader trends in affordable and sustainable living. Here’s a projection of where the tiny house industry might be 10 years from now, based on my philosophy and the current trajectory:
- Mainstream Housing Option: Tiny homes could become a widely accepted solution to the affordable housing crisis in the U.S.A. As housing costs continue to rise, more people may turn to tiny homes as a practical way to own property without massive debt. My work, particularly my focus on affordability, is already setting a standard for how tiny homes can fill this gap.
- Zoning and Legalization: Over the next decade, we can expect more progress in zoning laws and regulations. I have frequently highlighted the need for changes in local ordinances to accommodate tiny homes. With increased advocacy and public demand, more cities and counties may create policies that make it easier to live legally in tiny homes.
- Eco-Friendly Living: Sustainability is a driving force in the tiny house movement, and I have been an advocate for low-impact living. In 10 years, the industry could become a leader in renewable energy integration, off-grid solutions, and eco-friendly building materials.
- Expansion of Tiny Home Communities: Our development of tiny home communities demonstrates the potential for these spaces to thrive. Over the next decade, these communities may grow across the country, providing not just homes but also fostering a sense of connection, shared resources, and communal living.
- Greater Innovation in Design and Technology: With builders like us leading the charge, tiny home designs are becoming increasingly creative and efficient. Future innovations could include smart technology integration, modular designs, and advancements in multi-functional furniture.
- Appeal to Diverse Groups: The industry could expand its reach to a wider demographic, including retirees, young professionals, and those affected by natural disasters or economic hardships. My collaboration with companies like Lowe’s to provide tiny homes for disaster relief is a blueprint for how tiny homes can serve as emergency housing.
- Cultural Shift Toward Minimalism: I often discuss how tiny living promotes simplicity and freedom. As more people embrace minimalism, tiny homes could become a symbol of a cultural shift away from consumerism and toward intentional living.
- My Perspective: I emphasize keeping tiny homes affordable and accessible. I see the tiny house movement not just as a business, but as a way to help people live better lives. The passion and dedication to affordability, community, and sustainability could shape the industry’s future significantly.
HC: What is the annual construction rate? Do you wait on clients/demand or keep creating and hope that someone buys?
RJ: Incredible Tiny Homes, has built over 1,000 tiny homes since the company’s inception in 2014. We offer both custom-built homes and pre-designed models, like the “Incred-I-Box,” which are built in advance and available for immediate purchase. This approach allows us to cater to clients who prefer ready-made options, as well as those seeking personalized designs. This dual strategy enables us to meet existing demand while also anticipating future interest, ensuring they can provide homes to clients promptly.
HC: Which build has been your favorite and why?
RJ: I am proud of many of our builds over the years, as each project tells a unique story and reflects our passion for creativity, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. While I haven’t singled out one specific build as an absolute favorite, I do want to share details about projects that stand out for their creativity, impact, or personal meaning.
- The Hobbit-Themed Tiny Home: I love creative and whimsical designs, and the Hobbit-themed tiny home is often highlighted. This build stood out because of its intricate details, such as rounded windows, natural wood accents, and a magical aesthetic. It allowed me to express my craftsmanship and artistry fully.
- The “Incred-I-Box” Model: While it’s a standard model and not a single build, I am very proud of the affordability and accessibility of the Incred-I-Box. Starting at just $18,000, it represents my mission to provide housing options for those who might not be able to afford traditional homes.
- Disaster Relief Homes: I am deeply satisfied with the homes we have built for disaster victims, such as the collaboration with Lowe’s for Hurricane Helene survivors. These builds were impactful because they provided immediate relief and hope to people who lost everything.
- The First Custom Home: The very first tiny home I built, The Hobbit House, holds a special place in my heart. It was the beginning of the journey into the tiny house movement and marked the start of my company’s mission to make homeownership affordable.
- Innovative Custom Builds: Some custom homes, such as those with rooftop decks, fold-out features, or highly personalized interiors, are particularly memorable because they allowed me to push the boundaries of tiny home design and engineering.
Why do these tiny houses stand out for me?
- Creativity: I enjoy builds that challenge me to think outside the box and create unique designs.
- Client Impact: Homes that make a profound difference in people’s lives— whether they’re for a family downsizing, retirees, or disaster survivors—are deeply rewarding for me.
- Practical Innovations: Projects that combine affordability with high functionality, such as the Incred-I-Box, reflect my philosophy of “making dreams come true for everyone.”

HC: What’s the next big challenge for your company?
RJ: Incredible Tiny Homes is currently navigating several significant challenges as the company continues to grow and innovate in the tiny home industry.
- Navigating Zoning and Legal Regulations: One of the primary hurdles is addressing zoning laws and building codes that often do not accommodate tiny homes. These regulations can vary significantly across different municipalities, making it challenging to find suitable locations for tiny home communities. Educating local governments and advocating for more inclusive policies is an ongoing effort.
- Expanding Infrastructure for Tiny Home Communities: Developing infrastructure to support multiple tiny home communities is a complex task. Projects like the Mountain and Buffalo Creek development, require substantial planning and resources to create roads, utilities, and communal spaces that meet residents’ needs while preserving the natural environment.
- Balancing Affordability with Quality: Maintaining the delicate balance between affordability and quality is a constant challenge. The company strives to offer cost-effective housing solutions without compromising on craftsmanship or materials. Innovations like the “Incred-I-Box” model aim to provide affordable options but scaling production while ensuring quality remains a significant focus.
- Addressing Financing Barriers: Securing financing for potential buyers is another obstacle, as traditional mortgage lenders often do not recognize tiny homes as standard dwellings, especially if they are mobile. Exploring alternative financing options and working with financial institutions to develop loan products tailored for tiny home buyers is an ongoing endeavor.
- Managing Increased Demand and Production Scaling: As interest in tiny homes grows, scaling production to meet demand without sacrificing quality or extending lead times is a significant challenge. Implementing efficient manufacturing processes and possibly expanding facilities are considerations to ensure the timely delivery of homes to customers.
By proactively addressing these challenges, I and Incredible Tiny Homes aim to continue providing innovative, affordable, and sustainable housing solutions, contributing positively to the tiny home movement and the broader housing market.
