Candles are beautiful and perfect for home décor. Their fragrant scents can elevate the aesthetic of a room. Although not many people are familiar with the concept of scentscaping, the process of filling a space with invigorating scents has been around for generations and we all have been doing it unwittingly through sweet-smelling candles. On our candle-making journey, we got to creating a Peony candle, and here in the article we discuss the process of a DIY peony candle so that you can make one, too.
The wax flower inspired by its eponymous gorgeous bloom, is one of the most alluring candles you can make at home. The scented candle can be made in different colors and fragrances with texture and folds of petals adding to the aesthetics of a room while wafting aroma.
Why DIY Peony Candle
You can go to Etsy, Amazon, or any other online retailer you frequent or perhaps visit your local stores to purchase these candles, which is fine. A 1.6-ounce peony flower candle costs between $7 and $10 on Amazon, while a 2.8-ounce peony flower candle will cost $12 to $15 on Etsy. But did you know that these can be made at home for less than $10?
DIYers have been saving money by making seasonal and festive home décor items at home for half the price we pay at stores. The best part of DIY-ing things is that you can reuse some of the material over and over again, for example, if you were to DIY a peony candle at home in a silicone mold, you can use that mold to make more candles.
Materials You Need:
- Silicone Peony Mold [Buy on Amazon $6]
- 2.20 lbs Soy Wax [Buy on Amazon $7]
- Cotton Thread Wick [Buy on Amazon $2.4]
- Fragrance Oil of Choice [Buy on Amazon $6.8]
- Wick Holder (optional)
- Dye (optional)
Note: While the total cost for these ingredients is more than $10, you must remember that you can reuse the mold. You only need 2.4-ounce wax out of 2 lbs, while the cotton thread wick will give you over 100 candles for one purchase, and the fragrance oil will also last for 5-6 candles. So when you look at the bigger picture, the total cost for one candle does come to under $10.
So now that we have the ingredients, let’s make a beautiful peony candle at home.
How to Make Peony Candle at Home for Under $10
Begin by melting the wax in a pan. There are two ways about it: You can melt the wax using a double boiler method (the one used to melt chocolate to make ganache) or you can opt for putting the pan directly over the stove on low heat.
While the wax is melting, put the wick through your mold. You can use a quilt needle or a small screwdriver to push the thread wick through the bottom of the silicone mold.
Once the wax is melted, check the temperature. When the temperature of the wax is 80-degree Celsius or 185-degree Fahrenheit, put in it your choice of color and fragrance oil and give it a mix. The rule of thumb is one ounce of fragrance for every pound of wax or 10 percent fragrance of the total wax. Stir it slowly for two minutes to let the wax blend nicely with the color and fragrance and set it aside to cool down.
Next, heat the mold to remove any dust particles, reduce the temperature differences between the wax and the mold. This step is not always followed but it is vital. You can preheat the mold with a heat gun or a hair dryer on hot setting. This will allow wax to settle down nicely inside the mold and it would not break on demolding. Then, gently pour the wax into the mold and use two sticks or a wick holder to hold the wick secure and prevent it from sinking in the melted wax puddle.
Now set it aside for at least two hours allowing the wax to set and dry. After two hours, it’s time to demold the candle. Start by gently peeling off the sides while lightly pushing the mold from the bottom to free the delicate petals.
Once removed, trim the excess wick and decorate your space with the DIY peony candle. You can make bulk scented candles as these allow excellent scentscaping, can be used for decoration on birthdays and as holiday gifts, bridesmaid gifts, and wedding favors. So how many are you making?
