The popular American sitcom How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) gave us a new way of reciting love stories. The nine-season series follows the protagonist Ted Mosby and his four best friends in New York’s Manhattan as they deal with career, love, and life. Ted recounts his search for love for his daughter Penny and son Luke in 2030 as a frame story. This journey, much of which was set in Ted’s apartment – he shared with his best friend Marshall – offers a blend of humor, amazingly written subplots, and iconic characters. We laughed, cried, and were comforted by this eclectic group of friends, amassing a massive fan following.
To such fans, a LEGO Ideas submission by its member Dreamnbricks brings Ted and Marshall’s apartment to life with some apparent and some hidden Easter eggs. LEGO Ideas is a forum where fans can submit their own LEGO creations and vote on favorites, from which LEGO takes its picks for production.
The HIMYM LEGO set has around 1,300 pieces and six mini-figures, which include Ted, Marshall, Lily, Robin, Barney, and the girl with the yellow umbrella (Tracy). You even get Missy the goat in the package. Remember, Missy the goat? More such tidbits from memorable episodes are included in this LEGO set so fans can enjoy a hands-on experience celebrating the show. You can enact different scenes from the nine-year-long show and relive the funny plots right on your table.
The model features the kitchen, and living area complete with a piano, fireplace, Ted’s work desk, bathroom, and Ted and Marshall’s bedrooms from the show. The miniaturized character figures capture the essence of their life-size versions. Blonde Barney is all suited up and carrying his Playbook around; Ted is sporting his red cowboy boots and unkempt hair; brown-haired Marshall is wearing a T-shirt and hoodie; Lily has red hair and is fashionable as always; and brunette Robin is ready to head out for her job as a news reporter.
It is the small details meticulously executed to bring a wholesome LEGO building experience for the fan. The kit is designed like a studio set with a How I Met Your Mother placard on top, along with studio lighting lined along the edge of the walls.
The apartment is dotted with nostalgic tidbits like Ted’s GNB drawing for his project; the blue French horn that Ted stole for Robin on their first date; a miniaturized version of the GNB ATM; the popular intervention sign still hangs above the piano; and the radiator with which Ted handcuffed Barney to prevent him from gambling and finding out Superbowl results. Ah…good times!
The apartment set even includes the two swords hung over the piano. You know, the ones with which Marshall accidentally stabs his fiancée Lily early in the show? The pineapple is a nod to the famous pineapple incident, which nobody knew where it came from, and the mystery was finally solved in the show’s spinoff How I Met Your Father.
Even Marshall’s nude art by Lily she hid behind the piano from her friends makes an appearance in the HIMYM LEGO set. The yellow umbrella that led Ted to his future wife is neatly tucked into a corner.
These little pieces of the show built from bricks are not what makes this LEGO set great. The modular design that allows you to move and customize the scenes makes it perfect for fans. You can reenact scenes from the show by placing characters in different settings. For instance, have friends conduct interventions for each other. Is Ted getting married to another girl he just met? Or Barney reciting one of his legendary plays from the Playbook. Or Ted locked in the apartment with Missy the goat. Poor Ted, beaten up by a girl goat.
The show’s popularity is still omnipresent almost a decade after the final episode, entertaining a new generation of fans, offering them wisdom, laughs, tears, and sometimes heartbreaking moments. Its great writing and acting keep the show alive, celebrating Ted’s great outlook on life and love despite his hardships most of us can relate to.
At the time of writing, the project has amassed over 4,000 supporters. A minimum of 10,000 backers will put the HIMYM LEGO set in LEGO’s review panel. If picked for production, fans will soon be able to relive the love and friendship of the cast. If you wish to see this kit come to life, head on to LEGO Ideas and cast your vote to support it.
