Holidays are important as they bring people closer despite their differences, problems, or hardships. In a heartwarming story, a Halloween display has been a source of joy and comfort to a cancer patient in Butler County, Ohio. A Butler County resident, Bill Pyles, has been putting up Halloween displays for years and this year’s display has been a light in the dark for a woman battling cancer.
The Pyles family has been collecting skeletons of different sizes and setting them up in their front yard, rearranging them often in the weeks approaching Halloween. There have been instances when passersby have admired the displays, while some did not like them—so much so that they have occasionally received nasty letters about the displays.
However, amid all this, their display was a source of joy for a certain someone. One day, Pyles found a generous note in his mailbox addressed to “The Bone Family” from a woman named Tammy Weihe. Tammy was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and found comfort in their Halloween display.
She wrote the letter to thank the family for giving her solace when she needed it the most. She mentioned she passed the Pyles family’s Halloween display on her way to the hospital for radiation therapy every time and the display cheered her up. Weihe also talked about the endearing details and the witty changes the family would make that she would look forward to seeing on her next visit to the hospital. The letter read:
“I’ve been driving past your house for the past 19 days on my way to radiation. A highlight of my journey has been checking to see who else has joined the Bone family and what they’re up to. Thankfully, Wednesday, Sept. 11, is my final radiation treatment, though I may need to continue driving by once in a while to see what’s new. Thanks for the diversion, Tammy.”

On one occasion, the Pyles family made a special display change. They made signs to encourage Weihe on her last day of treatment. The family added custom signs that said, “Good job! You made it” which were uplifting and she even took pictures on her way back home.
For her, this gesture of kindness was very touching. The holiday spirit distracted her mind from thinking about her treatment and gave her strength to fight the disease. Such is the beauty of festivals, they bring each other closer and fill hearts with joy. You never know when a deed can give someone the heart to keep going on and fight their hardships to emerge victorious.
