Carsten in der Elst, a furniture and object designer from Cologne, Germany, unveiled his new furniture collection at the Stockholm Design Week. Titled ‘Graywacke Offcut Collection,’ his designs are created using industrial byproducts like waste quarry sandstone. Some of these designs comprising coffee table, chair, floor lamp, and bench, look like LEGO structures in stone.
The designer is known to scout for industrial byproducts which he turns into vague furniture designs. For his latest furniture designs, he has used large slabs of tough and dark sandstone as the basic material. It is thus a form of recycled or upcycled art apart from the very basic object design pioneered by Carsten in der Elst.
The coffee table is created using three rough slabs of dark-colored stone. The design has been kept raw to give it a unique identity. Though the tabletop is made smooth, it boasts a shape that mimics the natural form. The natural curves and crevices of the stone make the design praiseworthy.

The idea behind this work was to keep objects unchanged in their appearance so that they may resemble the structure and texture of large rocks. Also, as the building pieces are not processed the right fit and kind were found out just like building a LEGO structure.
Graywacke Offcut Collection features a floor lamp made using discarded sandstone. It has a large orb-shaped bulb which gives a unique personality to the lamp. The designer has mentioned on his Instagram page that the floor lamp was one of the earliest stone objects in the Graywacke series.
The other notable furniture items in the Graywacke collection are coffee tables and benches. The designer has been able to create appealing masterpieces using discarded stones and most of his followers on social media have liked the individual designs uploaded by him.
