Architecture firm 2001 has unveiled its sustainable solution for mobile living. Dubbed Esch 22 Space Station (or E22SSPIU! – with PIU standing for Pump It Up), the new creation is located in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, and redefines architecture by combining modern design with sustainable materials. Built for the client Ville d’Esch-Alzette, the 990-square-foot E22SSPIU! mobile sleeping hut accommodates up to six people.
In its compact form, the trailer facilitates easy transportation. When the trailer is stationed, it goes through a dramatic transformation. Through a pneumatic strut system, two lateral wings unfold and form a circular platform with a 9-meter diameter with cork flooring that adds comfort and aligns with the firm’s eco-conscious practices.
The cork surface lays the foundation for a giant double-shell pneumatic dome that inflates to create a generous space for sleeping. This sleeping habitat is equipped with a mattress, portable lamp, manual ventilation, electricity plugs, storage, and a grated metal section, creating a welcoming space for the dwellers. Accommodating up to six people, the upper level can be accessed via stairs from the kitchen or via an elevator system designed for people with reduced mobility as New Atlas mentions.

The compact form of E22SSPIU! is a stainless steel trailer. It is fully equipped with the necessities of a regular home such as a kitchen with fridge, cooktop, sink, and cabinets, and a bathroom with shower, toilet, and sink. There is a dining area for a perfect get-together with family and friends. For glazing, there is a window at the rear.
In tune with sustainability, the maker has also integrated a water recycling system where wastewater from the kitchen and bathroom is reused, facilitating water conservation. As the firm states, “E22SSPIU! problematizes, by its architectural and technical nature, our discipline’s and society’s relation to resources; soil, water and energy.”
