Quirky furniture pieces drawing inspiration from unlikely places have carved a special niche. A case in point is the unusual coffee table by Berlin-based industrial design studio ‘ae’ that primarily dwells upon unfamiliar contexts for products, objects, home furniture, and spaces. It is worth noticing that the entire collection has pieces that are all hand-cut from cork and structured with wooden profiles.
Observed as part of the brand’s latest DOL series featuring wall shelves and chairs, the DOL coffee table is crafted using expanded cork, glass, and pine. Deriving inspiration from Jeju, a volcanic island in South Korea where black volcanic stones serve as the fundamental element, the furniture piece is made by recreating fictitious cork stones that can be stacked and balanced to find functionality.
Expanded cork has insulation properties, is lightweight, and is highly sustainable as it renews itself every nine years. Inspired by the island’s black volcanic stones, the DOL coffee table features a look-alike shape and color.

Bringing character and texture to the make, the final process includes adding sanded cork finished with wood oil and wax. The rectangular assortment of differently sized cork stones are stacked upright and support each other in a vertical and horizontal pattern. A clear glass tabletop is wedged between the cork stones mimicking a clear water pool trapped between stones. Check out the made-to-order collection at ae.
