It is amazing to find and build a nurturing space for yourself where you can live and grow at your own pace. A Brisbane artist, Chelsea found a thriving space in her DIY Bus Home nestled amidst nature. She converted an old Mercedes bus into a peaceful haven where she carries on with her art and finds liberation in her passion.
This DIY bus home is enchanting and blends with its surroundings seamlessly. Chelsea has transformed the exterior into a relaxing spot with a garden and a covered patio for entertaining guests. The patio allows her to live freely and openly even in a tiny space. It features cozy seating areas, tables, and fairytale vibes.
Inside, the space has been beautifully decorated. It is incorporated with vintage décor, reclaimed furniture, fairy lights, and moody and subtle lighting throughout. The driver’s side has been taken over by plants, lighting, and cozy décor to make the space inviting. Large uncovered windows bring plenty of light and natural views inside to keep the bus conversion home cozy and secure while open and connected to the outdoor elements.
Chelsea is an artist and it is important to have a designated working space. She has built a workspace using a second-hand vintage studio desk with drawers and a chair to comfortably work on her illustrations and writing.
Parallel to her workspace, there is an exquisite kitchen. It is equipped with an impressive red gum timber countertop, a sink, and an old sideboard repurposed as kitchen cabinetry. There is a mini fridge, a microwave, and a toaster to make cooking accessible. She has ample storage, enough to keep all the kitchen essentials in one place. For power and water supply, she relies on the grid and wishes to employ off-grid options soon.

Beyond her kitchen and studio desk is her lovely lounge space. It has a two-seater couch with a granny self-crocheted blanket and pillow for extra comfort. The couch has a vibrant green color that goes well with the space. Chelsea has personalized the space with artwork hanging on the wall facing the lounge space. Opposite the lounge space, there is an additional sitting area.
The wall with the artwork acts as a divider between the main space and the bedroom area. There are little treasures, artwork, and books that make her bedroom truly a mesmerizing space in the DIY bus home. There is a long and open wooden shelf in her bedroom with drawers for her clothes. It displays journals, ceramic mugs, sketchbooks, and other handmade items.
It has a queen-size bed with pillows in eclectic colors and a display wall behind. There is a good amount of storage including cabinets, drawers under the bed, and a sliding mirror wardrobe, everything she has strategically chosen to fit into the space without making it too cramped.

The bathroom is accessed from the bedroom, enclosed by a door. Chelsea’s bathroom has a lot of personality. First is a stunning sink from her previous bus home, which makes for a perfect centerpiece in the bathroom. There is a timber countertop with wooden vanities below, a luxury tiled shower, and a composting toilet. A vintage mirror and fairy lights accentuate the vibe of the entire space.
Chelsea’s DIY bus home is the epitome of her colorful and passionate personality. Her home brings out the best in her and that is what makes the space more special. She has been living in her bus home for years and is content with her surroundings where she can slow down and focus on things that matter. She spent a whopping amount of AUD 15,000 to $20,000 (roughly $10,000 to $13,400) to turn an ordinary bus into a work of art.
