Portable projectors are ten a penny over Amazon and other e-retail stores. From a cheap $60 Halloween projector to a $60,000 high-end projector, these useful gadgets offer a compelling blend of portability and chic design and impress with their audio and visual performance. Dangbei, an innovator in the smart entertainment industry has been trying to leave its mark in the projector industry for many years, and its latest bet is Dangbei Freedo, a built-in battery and Google TV-incorporated Freedo projector.
Set to launch at IFA 2024, Dangbei Freedo is the company’s first-ever portable projector. As aforementioned, the projection device features a 60Wh built-in battery that offers extended viewing, curtailing the need for power cords and making it ideal for camping trips or outdoor adventures. We have no word on the runtime, but I expect it to go two hours straight, without draining much of its battery. Even if the battery runs out earlier than anticipated, the projector boasts a type-C port that supports power bank charging, extending its run time further.
Freedo also comes with a Google TV option that allows you to watch your favorite programs, without jumping from one application to the other. If this doesn’t impress you, Dangbei has integrated a gimbal stand, which tilts over 100 degrees, allowing users to project stable visuals onto walls or ceilings with ease.
The stand not only stabilizes your projector but also enhances your viewing experience. When inside a tent or a trailer, the projector can be angled towards the ceiling for a bedroom projector experience, while outdoors, it can align with a projector screen without additional props.
Designed for convenience and versatility, the Dangbei Freedo boasts a lightweight, compact form factor for easy one-handed carrying. Furthermore, the projector comes with a shockproof, recyclable EPP carry case and a dust-proof bag. Despite its small size, the Freedo delivers impressive performance. As per the company, “The projector covers over 90 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut and supports HDR, providing vibrant 1080p images up to 120 inches.” If this doesn’t impress you, the projector also features Dolby Audio-certified 360-degree surround sound, enhancing the overall experience.

On a critical consideration though with a projector of that size, it’s hard to believe that the small drivers will be able to deliver impactful audio in an outdoor space. An audiophile might argue that the projector’s compact dimensions might limit the effectiveness of its drivers’ movement and result in low-fidelity sound that underperforms at low frequencies. However, fog will clear, once the company exhibits the projector at IFA or sends a unit for a hands-on review.
