There have been numerous chair designs over the past 100 years or so that have established themselves as the best among the lot. Although the most common furniture piece, chairs have the capability to transform mundane spaces into stunning interiors. A case in point is the Cosmos chair by Brooklyn-based designer Peter Minsoub Sim. The Cosmos chair boasts an unorthodox form that brings the universe and design to life in one structure through digital fabrication and analog craftsmanship.
Peter Minsoub Sim used 400 unique pieces amassed and integrated with cast-brass, glass, and 3D-printed elements to create hardwood maple furniture that is an ode to our universe. The result is an empowering piece of furniture worthy of the Queen of the Universe or the Goddess of the Cosmos.
Sim says his creation is “Far from fantasy and is a love letter to our physical world.” “Far from sculpture, Cosmos is a chair,” he adds.
It is filled with intricate patterns. Cobalt blue glass eggs adorn the sides of the chair while similar glass stars form the halo of the backrest. These cobalt blue accents contrast with earthy tones and rough opaque wooden surfaces.

Reflecting the beauty of the universe, each ornamental element serves a purpose. For instance, the tiny flowers with mesh patterns on the side edges are placed strategically to conceal the joinery while allowing one to take a closer peek through the meshes. The inside of the seat is filled with miniature figurines telling numerous narratives. Hidden inside the spine of the chair, there are tiny brass birds and a brass fairy maker.
Currently on display at Room 57 Gallery, New York, the Cosmos chair by Peter Minsoub Sim is the first piece in a nature-inspired furniture series, with imagery dedicated to the earth, the sun, clouds, waves, trees, birds, and water. This astounding chair is sure to go down in history books of furniture design as one of the most iconic pieces.
