Studio TOOJ, a Stockholm-based company has created the Contourage quartz sand console table designed by Johan Wilén. It is a bright blue table with a unique form and most interestingly, it is made from 3D-printed sand using a binder jetting process. The Contourage console table was showcased at Milan Design Week 2024 as part of the exhibition Restrained Beauty by Studio TOOJ. German manufacturer Sandhelden helped construct the table, especially for the binder jetting process that employs locally sourced quartz sand.
The process involves additive manufacturing where a liquid binder is applied to merge powder material. The material layers are then joined together to form an object, thus helping shape the object. The binder used for the Contourage console table is furan resin, obtained from biomass such as rice hulls, sugarcane, and corn husks. The creator wanted to come up with a table that remains hollow while at the same time using sand as material to reduce the usage of the building components.
The Contourage console table uses innovative manufacturing methods without compromising on design. The table has a wood grain pattern that looks exquisite and has an organic feel. It also earns points on the sustainability score. The non-toxic and eco-friendly bright blue color was spray painted. Associated with a calming effect, the blue color also refracts beautifully against the sand grains.
The sand used for the table can be reused at the end of its life. The Contourage console table is made of about 93 percent sand and the remaining 7 percent comprises furan binder, epoxy, and the coating. The binder and epoxy can be burned out when recycling the table.
The table measures 55-inch-long, 15-inch-wide and 29.9-inch-high. It weighs 200 lbs, making it somewhat of a challenge to move around without help. The table is made-to-order and the price is available on request on the Studio Tooj website.
