If you too are bored of your plain, old coffee table, perhaps this whimsical creation can inspire you to try DIY-ing something new and mind-blowing. YouTubers Martina and Hansi of Nerdforge have spent a month and a half creating one of their biggest builds, which is a coffee table that encompasses a miniature wizard’s library inside visible from the tabletop.
The couple, Martina and Hansi, is known for their elaborate creations with charming and attention-grabbing details. The result: amazing designs that tickle the human imagination while remaining perfectly functional in everyday life with a splash of whimsy.
This time, Martina and Hansi decided to build a coffee table containing a whole other world beneath its glass top. Martina began by designing the layout of the miniature, starting with one bookshelf from real wood to create a scale for the project. From there, she cut an arch and drawer doors, picked decorative items and books to fill the bookshelf, and gave it character with carvings and adding baluster shapes. The miniature bookshelf was then stained and waxed.
For the box-like structure of the table, Martina got baluster-style legs and beech hardwood for tabletop and sides. One quarter of the legs was cut vertically to fit the wooden box in which the library houses. Meanwhile, Hansi CNC-ed the book bind patterns that are glued to the outside of the wooden box to give the table an impression of a library shelf. The CNC patterns are then sanded for a smooth finish.
Martina, in the meantime, created teeny-tiny potion bottles to go into the library, because you know, it is a wizard/witch’s library. Since she wanted to feel the library full of life, real, and a little bit cluttered, more bookshelves were created using the scaled model, along with a stained glass window wall, a study table, and furniture.
Hansi made a floor using wooden stirring sticks to give it a hardwood plank vibe. Then the bookcases, doors, and windows were glued to the box walls to complete the infrastructure of the wizard’s room. Martina attached cornices and molding on the exterior of the box for ornate detailing.
A power cord was run through one of the legs and behind the internal infrastructure to facilitate lighting inside the diorama. One of the sections of the table can be lifted out to allow access into the miniature library, which was mostly created to be able to film the inside of the room.
Next, the tabletop was cut. It is a glass top set within a wooden frame with carved edge molding, giving you peeks inside the otherworldly library. Hansi, along with @arilla’s miniatures, created and painted small specifics like books and centerpieces to go in the library, while Martina made a study table with meticulously crafted details.

The ultimate result of this labor of one and a half months is a stunning diorama that feels like a cross between Dumbledore’s office and a high witch’s workshop. There is a crow, two cats, a witch’s hat, a magical staff, a spellbook, mini lanterns, books strewn about, a high chair, mismanaged papers peeking out from half-open drawers, a mirror, and even a mini painting hanging on the wall in an ornate wooden frame.
Each detail adds so much to the realism of the room, it makes you feel like you are witnessing an elaborate movie set. This whimsical coffee table with a magical miniature wizard’s library is probably one of the best dioramas we have come across, ever.
So, did it inspire you to get off your couch and build something cool like this DIY furniture?
