It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas and it is necessary that you know the holiday decoration trends before you start decking the halls with boughs of holly. Yes, I know most people do not follow the trends when it comes to holidays; instead, they bring out their old ornaments and Christmas lights. But following the holiday trends is not a bad thing. Even if you don’t believe in the consumerism surrounding most holidays, there are ways you can adapt already available decorative items to fit the trends or make them at home.
Christmas decoration trends for 2024 are full of nostalgia, bows, and ribbons, supporting oversized décor, relying on non-traditional items, and popping mushrooms, Pinkmas, and Bridgerton. These holiday trends make us better understand how we decorate our homes for Christmas. From the front door to the tree, Christmas decoration trends for 2024 cater to every corner of the house and color them in festive cheer.
Non-Traditional Christmas Décor
I am more of a traditional Christmas gal, but the youthful energy for the holiday season is embracing non-traditional Christmas decorations rather than relying on classic palettes and styles. It also observes a rising trend of colorful miniature Christmas trees adorning tabletops and fireplace mantels.
This year’s eclectic colorful palette nods to the ‘80s and ‘90s, with surprising entrants black and pink. Pastels are also rejoicing in the festive cheer, making headway in the dinnerware, ornament, and tree departments. The trend has inspired unconventional trees, bold colors, disco-themed, maximalist patterns, and rustic finishes to add a modern touch to the decorations. Interestingly, mushrooms have also become an important part of tree decoration this year.
Retro Disco is Back
I wasn’t raised on disco, but I know the appeal. The glamour of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with shimmering dance floors, glittering light balls, and metallic accents, is making a big comeback this Christmas or Chrome-mas, if you will. This trend has sleek holiday elements with glamour sprayed all over.
The playful appeal is further accentuated by the mirror-ball baubles, glittery glass, and disco ball ornaments that have popped up at various retailers, online and in-store. I’d love to decorate my tree with such groovy ornaments and colorful LED lights.

Christmas – Thy Name is Nostalgia
Christmas is synonymous with nostalgia, offering a walk down memory lane. Given the popularity of retro décor, it is difficult to ignore the nostalgic Christmas decorations from vintage ornaments to hand-painted figurines. These charming decorations are making a comeback with a fresh aesthetic.
Classic nutcracker decorations, timeless color schemes, gingerbread houses, and candy canes are here to adorn your home this festive season. Stirring memories of cozy winter evenings, this holiday trend is all about being with loved ones or at least having them with you through these decorations if you are not spending holidays with your friends or family.
Thoughtfulness of Artisans and Craftsmanship
For the past few years, major holidays like Halloween and Christmas have been smothered in wasteful consumerism with rampant shopping. However, a slow transition toward thoughtful artisan and handcrafted aspects of Christmas has been a welcome change.
Handwoven ornaments, live wreaths, and handmade gifts have gained quiet popularity, adding a personal and meaningful touch to holiday décor. To embrace this trend, you can try to find independent and local businesses to get customized gifts and festive goods instead of buying commercially produced items from large retailers.
Oversized & Maximalist Decorations
Christmas is better with chic minimalism, but that is only for me. According to this year’s trends oversized and maximalist Christmas decorations are a fan favorite. Christmas trees are being loaded with big baubles and other enormous decorative items.
This trend is all about the luxury and playfulness of the festivities. The maximalist approach has spread inside out, with social media being flooded with Christmas trees decked with supersized ornaments, giant paper stars, big festive bows adorning almost everything, and extravagant indoor decorations. So much so that the tree size is blowing up from the usual 7 feet to embrace the enormity of the trend.

Move Over Pinkoween, It’s Time for Pinkmas
With Pinkoween being the most celebrated trend of the last couple of years, Christmas enthusiasts felt a little ignored. To have their favorite holiday, stand even more out, people are embracing the Pinkmas trend, going full Barbie on the celebrations. And as much as I like the classic Christmas palette, I have to admit it looks pretty darn great.
Featuring fifty shades of pink – ranging from blush tones and pastels to richer shades like raspberry, fuchsia, purple, and burgundy – this year’s Christmas décor won’t just add a pop of color but be the big splash. You can go all out with a paintbrush and paint Christmas pink, mix and match it with other traditional hues, or have small tokens of the trends in the form of mini decorative items clad in pink.
Have a Bridgerton Christmas
Lady Whistledown is here to wish you a very Bridgerton Christmas. We all love Netflix’s Regency romance drama and London’s gossip girl Lady Whistledown, but I can attest that fans (me being one) love the lush colors, plush fabrics, gold accessories, ornate patterns, and stunning (sometimes weird) hairstyles even more.
This Netflix show has heavily inspired this year’s Christmas celebration while nodding to the maximalist trend as well. People are including frills and layers to their décor along with gold ribbons and velvety bows dotting the deep green trees and garlands. If you haven’t watched the show but want to be included in this trend, you cannot go wrong with giant velvety bows and ribbons adorning your staircase or the tree, or add a few warm metallic details.
These are the 7 most popular Christmas decoration trends of 2024. Let me know which one of these you are embracing this merry season. Have yourself a merry little Christmas!
