Bliss sofa is a handcrafted, one-off artpiece by New York-based creative agency Mother. The thought-provoking furniture is a satirical creation that reflects the dire situation of a world grappling with the effects of rising sea levels. It’s quite optimistic to imagine that we’ll manage to keep coastal flooding at bay but the maker has devised a solution for the worst-case scenario through an artistic vision. The conceptual floating furniture design cleverly highlights the pressing issue of climate change and its impacts on our environment and way of life.
The Bliss sofa is a fully functional prototype equipped with a water level gauge, emergency flares in the armrests and a paddle tucked in the backrest. When the water level goes above the bar, it transforms into a SOLAS-certified safety raft capable of navigating various situations, be they favorable or adverse. There is also an accompanying ottoman that packs inside a martini mixology kit, olives, sunscreen, and a user manual. This whimsical addition adds a touch of convenience and leisure to the overall concept.

The $100,000 sofa is made from a reclaimed 100-year-old pine wood, marine-grade foam and upholstered in Water resistant Sunbrella orange fabric similar to the one used to make life jackets. The dimensions of the sofa are 88L x 28.63W x 35.25H inches and there are two seats with separate tilted backs. As visible from the pictures, straps are used to affix the seat and back cushions.
The Bliss sofa is currently being showcased at the Tuleste Factory’s Harmonious Proportions exhibition during the 2023 NYCxDesign festival. This future-proof furniture piece not only showcases its artistic merit but also carries a profound message, serving as a commentary on the unfortunate times of natural crises!
