Ever thought about what a combination of a camper trailer and a van would look like? Well, you need not think about it anymore, as the French startup Bivoak has crafted an innovative RV that blends the best of both worlds into a unique creation dubbed the Bivan. The four-person sleeper not only captures the spirit of classic Volkswagen pop-top vans but also offers the versatility of a trailer that isn’t tied to a single vehicle.
The product isn’t entirely new, but the concept is worth glancing over. So much so that New Atlas decided to feature it even after years of release, thus garnering our attention as well. If you have a close look at the design, you will realize that Bivoak has borrowed inspiration from vintage VW campers. This is evident in the double-door entry of Bivan, which appears to be a nod to the dual rear doors of the iconic 1950s and ‘60s Volkswagen Kombi vans. These doors swing open to a generous 43-inch-wide opening, making it a breeze to load gear.
Then there’s the rear, where Bivoak has added a glass liftgate that flips up for panoramic views from the bed. But it didn’t stop there, the lift-gate is coupled with a drop-down tailgate that doubles as a handy outdoor table. It’s these simple yet brilliant additions that enhance the camping experience and set Bivan apart from the typical camper trailers.
Measuring 16.8 feet long, Bivan matches the length of a typical French tiny house. But unlike the compact dwellings, the trailer is surprisingly roomy. Inside, you’ll find a full-width bathroom, a rarity in trailers this size, complete with a shower and toilet cleverly positioned at opposite ends.
As surprising as it may sound, the trailer also features a living room and a kitchen as well. The living room includes a rear bench that transforms into a double bed, while the kitchen features a dual-burner gas stove, sink, and 65-liter fridge/freezer, alongside other cabinetry and drawers. Not to mention, a built-in wine rack and removable pedestal table that adds aesthetic to the trailer.

Finally, there is a pop-up roof that houses a spacious bed, sleeping a couple. Bivan campervan trailer sleeps four people in total, two in the main compartment and the other two in the pop-up tent, thus being ideal for small families or groups of friends hitting the road together.
To complement the functional interior, the trailer boasts a sleek and lightweight exterior, hence being towable by a wide range of vehicles. So, if you’ve been weighing the pros and cons of a camper van versus a trailer, the Bivan might just save you the headache. On a little downside, it isn’t available for purchase in the US at the moment but can be availed for rental purposes throughout Europe.
