Nothing beats the beauty of handmade things, be it furniture or a lighting fixture. The time and effort that goes into each handcrafted product is evident from the outcome and how it intrigues someone. A case in point is the Barnacles lighting collection, which simultaneously celebrates sea creatures and reclaimed materials. Part of the inaugural Artist Series by the Australian artisanal lighting brand Articolo Studios, the Barnacles light collection features a series of sculptural sconces handmade by Melbourne artist Emma Davies.
The new range of wall lighting fixtures comes in hand-finished metal forms dotted with pressed pigmented ‘barnacles’. Inspired by Davies’ practice of transforming everyday materials, the light fixtures have an intricate blend of artistry and illumination.
“Each intricate piece is imprinted with the unique patterns of my touch, reinforcing the idea that art is a living, evolving dialogue between creator and creation,” says Davies.
The delicate barnacle-like clusters have distinct sculptural expressions that bring the fixture to life. The clusters are formed by heating reclaimed bird netting and bailing twine into a malleable form. Later, these forms are pressed with a smooth rock to form a refined rounded fragment. Then the barnacles are fused with a simple square brass or bronze base to create an organic effect on the entire object.
Articolo founder and creative director Nicci Kavals worked closely with Davies to create the Barnacles lighting fixtures. Conceptualized by Kavals and created by Davies, the Barnacle Wall Sconce and Barnacle Connect Wall Sconce are sculptural expressions of light.
Each Barnacle sconce features an industrial, hand-finished metal casing, which contrasts with the delicate layering of barnacles. Its design evokes the visuals of marine barnacles attached to a pier on the shore.

While explaining the inspiration behind the eclectic collection, Kavals says, “Articolo has always cast a wide radius of curiosity, from architecture and art to fashion and dance. We’re delighted to deepen our connection to the arts by collaborating directly with local and international artists, fusing their unique practices with the sophisticated engineering and elevated design that Articolo Studios is known for.”
Each Barnacle sconce is designed in a choice of colors with imposing moody dark shades. Both the Barnacle Wall Sconce and Barnacle Connect Wall Sconce are available in bronze base with claret, ink, or bronze barnacle options, or brass with white barnacles. The curious arrangement of design is minimalistic yet so striking that it becomes a living thing that inspires conversations while promoting sustainability.
