Colorado-based Ball Corporation best known for its sustainable beverage packaging has partnered up with University of Colorado Boulder to introduce its newest packaging innovation, a disposable aluminum cup that can be recycled infinitely.
Introduced to collegiate football fans at CU’s Folsom Field during 2019 football season, it is aimed at minimizing unnecessary plastic pollution during sports events.
John A. Hayes, Ball’s chairman, president and chief executive officer said,
Ball and CU have a long history together, and we’re proud to team up with them to pilot our new aluminum cup at the collegiate level. Sports fans are becoming more mindful about the impact their everyday choices have on the environment, and we’re excited to offer them the opportunity to enjoy their favorite beverage at the game in our infinitely recyclable aluminum cup.
The company has introduced the disposable aluminum cup in response to growing consumer inclination toward sustainable products.
This partnership is part of Ball’s recently launched pilot program, for producing a limited number of aluminum cups through 2020, to be used during major sports and entertainment venues seeking to replace plastic cups.
Aluminum is one of the most sustainable materials found on earth. Just like aluminum cans, this aluminum cup can also be recycled endlessly. In addition to sustainability and recycling strengths, the Ball aluminum cup is sturdy, durable and cool to touch, giving a unique experience to beverage drinkers. It can also be customized with different logos and graphics.
The cup is currently available in a 20-ounce size and there are plans to introduce additional sizes in near future. Ball Corporation aims to expand its production in its Westminster, Colorado, innovation facility by the end of 2020.

According to Ball’s research 67 percent of U.S. consumers say they will visit a venue more often if they use aluminum cups instead of plastic cups. Replacing plastic cups with aluminum ones can be a significant step for minimizing plastic pollution as well as setting up a new standard for people.
