Upcycling is not an easy process but when you are committed to it and wish to create a way for sustainability then the sky is the limit. Aura – One of a Kite by designers Yotam Cohen and Assaf Shinfeld is one such creation that leaves a positive impact on our minds and the environment. The young duo gave new life to the kitesurfing waste by creating innovative furniture out of it.
Aura is a great example of how largely unexplored waste can also be used in creating something purposeful. The designers in this case used the discarded kite parachutes which are part of water sports. They sourced the fabric as raw material mostly from surf clubs and Facebook groups. The raw material then took the shape of vibrant chairs with the smartness of design planned by the designers.
The most amazing thing about Aura chairs is that they are created from truly lightweight materials. The overall design of Aura was formed with a mix of already available kitesurfing waste and some new materials. The cords derived from the kites were used to lay out the fabric and give a desired shape. Similarly, the air tubes were used as back supports or cushions. Also, different weave types were assembled with new materials to bring everything to meaningful form.
Initially, Cohen and Shinfeld started identifying waste that would suffice for their project. They used to do watersports and thus found inspiration in the form of kitesurfing parachutes as they are colorful and capture attention naturally. They did a lot of research on why these parachutes are discarded and how they can serve as a viable raw material for their work. One of the things that they found out in their research was that with the level of fabric technology, these outdated parachutes remain in good condition even when they are discarded or no longer used by surfers.

So the creation of the Aura chairs started with the designing of minimalist square frames that were made using thin iron. The idea was to give the spotlight to the kitesurfing waste as the main part of the creation. Interestingly, every chair has a different label which informs the user about the amount of fabric and cord used and a brief account of its former life as a water sports gear.
The labels also bear the donor’s name and location giving Aura chairs an individual identity of their own. The label states, “Crafted from upcycled kites, the object offers an eco-friendly experience that combines vibrant design with sustainability, and brings home a small piece of the ocean.” Apart from chairs, the designers have created other furniture objects that also look intriguing.
