Throughout history, if there’s one vehicle that has been outfitted with all sorts of practical modifications to allow everyone from farmers and military to municipality drivers and camping enthusiasts to tackle any terrain, in any weather, on any incline, and simply get the job done, it’s the Unimog. Revered for their off-road capabilities, these versatile and badass rigs can be found in jungles, mountains, and deserts as expedition vehicles and are lately gaining more popularity. Chinese RV manufacturer Armadillo saw this as an opportunity to drive sales and transformed the Mercedes-Benz Unimog into a camper that’s designed for four-wheeling. Dubbed Crawler S, the high-end motorhome is built on a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U4023 chassis.
Weighing in at 8.75 tons, the camper measures nearly 20 feet in length and stretches 8.16 feet wide. That’s the size of traditional tiny homes you would find in Europe. Anyways, these stats might make the camper seem like a behemoth, but its size is exactly what allows for the spacious interior and exceptional off-road capability that it’s known for. We will get to this part, but first, let’s talk through the exterior of the camper.
Armadillo has fully outfitted the Crawler S for the toughest conditions, including front fender flares, a tubular exo-skeleton-style roof rack, and LED lighting to keep you visible in the darkest corners of the world. Not to mention, a snorkel and custom steel bumper, which ensure that the motorhome can handle any obstacle thrown in its way, while an onboard inflation and deflation system means one can adjust tire pressure to suit the terrain.
On the inside, the Crawler S boasts a fully functional interior that comprises a beautifully appointed living space with a liftable double bed, a single bed, and ample room for up to three people. The space is thoughtfully designed, with a marine-grade teak floor, custom cabinetry, and modern amenities like a liftable TV, Bose sound system, and 5G wireless router. Long story cut short, Crawler S offers a generous space that combines modern comfort with the rugged durability needed for life on the road.
The interior also includes a kitchen. It comes equipped with a 143-liter fridge, a hidden induction cooktop, a sink, and a built-in microwave oven. The space is fully stocked with kitchenware, neatly stored in custom cabinets for easy access. Meanwhile, the bathroom is equally impressive, with a shower, an electric suction toilet, a wash basin, and a window. Connected to a 320-liter clean water tank, a 60-liter grey water tank, and a 70-liter black water tank, this camper is equipped to handle long-term living on the move.
The motorhome is powered by a 5.2-liter, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 231 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque. The makers say that the engine ensures one can tackle steep inclines and rough roads with ease. The makers further boast that the motorhome has a fuel tank capacity of 320 liters (plus an optional 75L auxiliary tank), which is decent enough to for 1000 miles before needing a refill. Thus, the Crawler S camper is best suited for extended road trips, living off the grid, or tackling some of the world’s most difficult landscapes.
The motorhome meets its power demand via a 920 ampere-hour, 24-volt lithium iron phosphate battery pack. These options provide all the necessary power required to run interior amenities. The camper also includes a 5 kW inverter/charger, a power management system, and a distribution panel to ensure that everything runs smoothly while you’re off the grid.
As evident in the pictures, the Crawler S is equipped with an 880-watt solar setup that keeps things running no matter where you are. While the standard setup of the Crawler S is already more than capable, Armadillo offers a range of optional extras to further enhance the experience. These include heavy-duty electric winches, an awning for added shelter, a rear storage box, and an outdoor kitchen trunk conversion. We are not sure about the exact price of the rig, but if High Consumption and Chinese translation is to be believed, the Crawler S motorhome is priced at ¥539,000,000 (roughly $3,620,000).
