Andrea Garuti’s laser-cut 3D models create a medieval battle scene

Imposing medieval castle, monstrous siege towers, diabolical catapults, behemothic trebuchets and brutal battering rams – this may seem to be a glorious battle scene from the Total War Series. But what if we told that all of these were achieved by just laser-cut 3D models?! Baffled? Well, you should be, as the entire 3D scene pictured above was deftly crafted by Italian designer Andrea Garuti with his adroit engineering expertise. Made from thirty-two P3 (about 31″x15″) size sheets, the individual 3D components were arranged collectively to give shape to the castle and the medieval ‘weapons of mass destruction’.

In fact, according to the designer, the ‘interlocking’ of the 3D shapes with laser cutting was the most difficult process to achieve. This was because each component had varying material as well as structural tolerances. However, some good ole engineering solved each and every one of the constructional issues. Oh, and lest we forget, the laser-cut trebuchet and the catapult actually fire their shots (check the videos at the bottom)!

For the overall grandiose project, Andrea Garuti won the first price in the GrabCAD/SolidSmack laser cut toy design competition.
