Airbnb has a knack for providing people with what they want or what they never knew they wanted. A case in point is the floating house from Pixar’s 2009 hit movie Up. I will be honest, this movie broke my heart and mended it. I bawled when Ellie died and Carl was left alone to fulfill their childhood dream. But that is the good thing about Pixar, it knows how to mend the audience’s heart, giving the story a somewhat happy ending, not the Disney-kind happy ending, but a true, close-to-reality ending. Airbnb knows how much this movie connected with the audiences and it has brought a Summer special for vacationers.
In its 2024 Summer Release, the holiday rental giant is launching the Icons category, which includes fantastical stays infused with the magic of screens, museums, and your favorite stars. But my favorite out of the 11 offerings from Airbnb has to be the floating Up house, listed by Carl Fredricksen, Pixar’s retired balloon salesman. Gotta appreciate the humor right?
The humor of the listing and the interior mirroring Carl and Ellie’s house is not what snags the attention. It’s the fact that this ‘house’ is levitating. Who’s ready for an adventure to Paradise Falls in South America?
Well, the airborne house wouldn’t take you anywhere. Located in the scenic red rocks of Abiquiu, New Mexico, this whimsical abode is made of dreams and features everything exactly as we saw in the movie, complete with 8,000 balloons hovering above the house. The house can suspend you 50 feet in the air using a crane.
Carl’s Airbnb features one bedroom, two beds, and a bathroom. The living room is recreated with the reading chairs of Ellie and Carl. It is dotted with tiny details reminding of the dearly departed Ellie, even the adventure book that the couple planned ever since they knew each other as kids, including going to the mystical Paradise Falls in Latin America.
I’m not going to lie, I’m tearing up writing this and I know it’s just a movie. But, that’s the thing about great cinema; it makes us feel things.

The Airbnb stay is brought to life to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the movie’s release on May 29, 2009. There is no word on how many slots will be available for renting. But you can request to book the Airbnb floating house from Up before May 13, 2024.
Aside from staying at the floating Up house, you can also spend a night in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy; hang out with Kevin Hart at Coramino Live Lounge; check out the re-creation of Marvel Animation’s X-Mansion in New York’s Westchester; wake up in the iconic art museum Musee d’Orsay in Paris; stay in Prince’s Purple Rain House in Minnesota; and do much more.
Airbnb says this is just the tip of the iceberg. A teaser! The company will be dropping new experiential stays spread across the world throughout the year.
