Tinted transparency and simple elegance define the Torn Lamp collection by Romania-based Guideco Design (rebranded as Artifexlab in March 2020) founded by the artist and graphic designer Ioan Stanean. Handcrafted from pine wood and transparent epoxy resin, these lamps are capable of providing a delightful illumination while also adding a unique, contemporary touch to any interior.
The Torn lamps take inspiration from the life-giving force of the wood sap and the way it flows through the tree branches. Each lamp consists of two pieces of wood, combined and highlighted with the transparent epoxy resin. All wood and resin lamps from the collection come equipped with a 5W LED light and feature different patterns carved on wood pieces to create a totally unique and outstanding illumination. Whether lighted or turned off, they look impressive in both conditions.
The Torn lamps are available in two models – Vertical (38H x 6.5W x 6.5D cm) and Curved with dimensions 14H x 38-42W x 6.5D cm. Blending wood with resin creates a simple yet unique effect that exudes various visual patterns.

Resin is the cold element of these wood and resin luminaries, contrasting the warm tones of wood to provide a clear and bright perspective on details.
We immediately fell in love with Ioan’s lamp designs, which is why we got in touch with him to know more about the build process and his inspiration behind the creations. Here is what he had to say:
HomeCrux: Please tell us why and how you make the Torn Lamps?
Ioan Stanean: I created the Torn Lamps because I wanted to bring the beauty of the massive wood to light and into people’s homes. The design of the lamps was inspired by how wood sap flows through the tree branches. Epoxy resin was the perfect material to accomplish my vision. I chose a yellowish shade of resin in order to create a warm, cozy feel to the lamps.
HomeCrux: Please explain the build process and the average time taken to complete a lamp.
Ioan Stanean: The production process is made out of several stages and it takes about one month for a lamp to be finished.
It all starts with picking the wood. I choose the pieces that have gnarls and beautiful wood patterns. Then I carefully tear the wood so that it gives dramatic looking thorns.
Then, the resin casting process starts. The resin is poured gradually, in layers, allowing the previous layer to cure, until the wood pieces are fully immersed in resin. After the resin is completely cured and hardened, it must be polished so it becomes transparent and glasslike.
Each lamp is polished 12 times, using finer sandpaper and polish paste for every polish. When this process is complete, I install the electrical part and the lamp is complete.
