Whether it’s home or urban open space, lighting is an essential component associated with safety and visual experience. The Italian manufacturer Artemide seems to incorporate the same idea in its O urban lights. Designed in collaboration with Chilean design studio Elemental, this series consists of O-shaped lights with built-in motion sensors to automatically turn on/off during the dark.
The idea is to create an automated urban lighting so that the surrounding nature can attain the required darkness in absence of people.
Alejandro Aravena, the founder of Elemental and a Pritzker Prize laureate, says;
The cities with the highest quality of life are those that were visionary enough to keep portions of untouched nature within their foot print and transform them into public spaces.
Made of aluminum, each unit from the collection has the ability to illuminate spaces when someone’s around and reduce light to a minimum when there’s no movement. This way, each lighting object is targeting safety, healthier environment and energy-efficiency in one go. Furthermore, they are designed to not to appear like a traditional urban lighting product.

The O urban light collection was launched during the Light+Building 2018. Currently, it is not available for purchase, but will come in floor-standing or suspended versions in the near future.
Today, when we’re clogging parks with lighting poles and cables for safety, the O lighting is a tribute to the mother nature and nocturnality of wildlife living in urban open spaces.
