Wave Park Group, Perth recently announced its latest project Urbnsurf, an artificial lagoon on the Swan River at Tompkins Park, Afred Cove. Perth has a number of beaches spanning across its coastal line but offers limited quality surfing opportunities. To provide better surfing opportunities and promote surfing culture, the company has come up with the idea of building Urbnsurf to offer a good alternative to ocean-based surfing in authentic way. It uses the Wavegarden technology to generate a broad range of waves for different surfers, be it a pro or amateur.
Tompkins Park situated along the Swan River is famous among the local community as a sports complex for providing expansive cycle ways in natural settings, and large open spaces for recreational activities. Plan to build an artificial lagoon for providing surfing facilities to the public is another feather in its cap.
Onboard Wavegarden technology is capable of producing wide range of waves in order to provide favorable surfing conditions no matter you are a beginner or professional.
Wave heights and ride lengths
Zone | Wave Type | Max. Wave Height | Avg Length of Ride | Avg Duration of Ride |
The Peak | Advanced | 2.0 m | 150 m | 17 secs |
The Banks | Intermediate | 1.2 m | 120 m | 12 secs |
The Bays | Beginner | 0.9 m | 60 m | 11 secs |
Moreover, the park will include lagoon-side amenities like café, roof-top bar, beach club, a pro shop, function center and much more to improve overall experience of local visitors as-well-as tourists. The park will be equipped with sub-surface LED lighting to enable day and night surfing. Dependence of the lagoon on renewable energy sources for fulfilling energy requirements and water saving systems to meet huge water demands makes it a sustainable recreation center.
This place is easily accessible because of its proximity to the Canning highway and Mandurah train line. The 4.4 ha area of the Tompkins Park including an artificial lagoon is scheduled to be completed in late 2018.
