The Touchdown trailers by Dutch company Expandable Movable Spaces are a great example of the latest innovations in mobility spaces. They feature retractable chassis and can be easily moved to different locations just like any other tiny house on wheels. The movable structure also comes with slide-outs on either side to expand the living space by almost twice its size.
Expandable initially designed trailers as versatile event spaces, but they can also be used in different applications now, including as a backyard studio or a mobile home. You are delivered with the trailer structure, and you can customize it in your desired way to create a coffee shop, mobile office, or home on wheels. All the essential living areas, such as a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, can be added to create a fully functional home.
A luxurious option is the new Expandable Mansion which comes fully equipped for a seamless and enjoyable living experience. It is outfitted with electricity, plumbing, and other services. With over 60 square meters of interior space, it includes a rooftop terrace, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom with a foldable bed, workspace, and storage. There is also an additional bedroom that can be used for guests or children. Weighing roughly 18 tonnes the Mansion requires a standard HGV (heavy goods vehicle) licence for towing.
What makes the Expandable Mansion worth its weight in gold is its ability to expand by almost twice its size in just 15 minutes by sliding both longitudinal sides outwards. When retracted, it’s 2.55m wide, but when all the elements – based on the Expandable touchdown technology – are fully extended, the interior space opens up to 4.83m wide.
Setting up the trailer is a breeze, thanks to its hydraulic system and handy integrated controller. The process starts with lowering the front legs. The truck will disconnect from the trailer, resting on the front legs and wheels. Now, the rear legs can be retracted down and wheels are lifted to the back of the trailer with a rail system. Finally, the unit is lowered to the ground. The unit can then – on the press of a button – automatically level itself without you having to worry about parking it on uneven ground.

Expandable trailers are constructed almost entirely from serially manufactured components, which keep the construction costs low and allow them to be delivered in under 14 weeks. If you wish to purchase, there are three configurations: Touchdown 38 ft, Touchdown 53 ft, and Pod. AutoEvolution notes that the 38-ft Touchdown model is the base for an Expandable mobile home while the Expandable Mansion is based on the company’s Touchdown 53-ft trailer. The price for the Expandable Touchdown 38 starts at $325,500. There’s no official word on the pricing of the Mansion.
