Historic structures are often converted as residences or vacation rentals, and Tonwell Tower in East Hertfordshire, England is another such example. Once a 1960s Brutalist water tower structure, it has been renovated as a unique Airbnb retreat to offer a truly unforgettable stay.
The current owners Matt and Ali have spent over four years restoring the structure in mid-century style and was completed in 2024. The tower is 75 feet (23m) tall, with a diameter ranging between 15 feet (4.5m) and 38 feet (11.5m) from the base to the top.
Guests have to climb through almost 100 spiral stairs, so it is not ideal for people who are acrophobic (afraid of heights) or physically challenged. Once inside, you will find 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside to make your stay special.
Originally commissioned by The Lee Valley Water Company and designed by Edmund Percey, the Tonwell Tower was constructed in 1964. After its renovation, it has been converted into a 160sqm vacation home featuring four bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms spanned across six floors. The 60sqm top floor has a full kitchen, dining, and living space while the lower levels feature a small home office, library, and laundry room.
