Every October, streets begin to fill up with bone-chilling displays. Gore and gothic pulse spread end-to-end. And blacks, oranges, and swathing whites creep into Halloween’s spooky palette. This year, we believe the shades of pink will rebel against the Halloween we have known. Strange, or is it?
Traditionally, a reminiscent of springtime blossom and love; pink as the color preference for Halloween décor took us by storm in 2023 after the success of the fantasy comedy Barbie. This swapping of regular Halloween decorations for pastel Halloween may be part of a slow but constant trend to stray away from the gory horror over the years. Especially amid kids who don’t mind being scared by pink unicorns anyway!
The playful idea of pink Halloween colloquially – ‘Pinkoween’ – resonates with many, so the stage for this year’s full-on pink invasion is set. The obsession with all things pink and Barbie, aka Barbiecore, has played a huge role in pushing the pink trend into fashion and home décor. This year, courtesy of interesting motifs appearing on Halloween shelves in pink, it is penetrating further into the scary domain.
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), upward of 1.8 million people dressed as Barbie last year, which topped the traditional witch and vampire costumes. This pink trend is likely to continue in 2024 as well.
Halloween, by nature of festivity, is all about imagination and self-expression. Transforming the everyday usual into that which is wild, unexpected, and creative is a norm. The palette of spooky therefore has no color bondage. Neither do the prominent blacks, the ritual oranges, and dashes of green remain perpetual, nor would pink break the boundaries of celebration.

Therefore, Pinkoween is a bold shift in the dark thematic tradition; a trend that will subtly energize the Halloween parties, displays, and costumes. Food is not excluded either! Pink skeletons, pastel skulls, bubble gum pumpkins, and neon pink witches will adorn doorways and mantels, the walls be embellished with fuchsia wreaths and garlands, providing a fresh breath of air to the shadowy grim of the black and orange in the world that’s been unquestionably heavy of late.
This shift will feel like a playful reimagination of our beloved holiday, letting us see how scary and subtle can coexist as traditions evolve. Pink-themed Halloween will make more stories to embrace and let the fabric of darkness lose, encouraging us to embrace different hues of expression – ‘softness alongside spookiness, sweetness next to terror.’
