Since humans started creating furniture, wood has been a primary material, and the most preferred as well. The new age designers also employ it for the reason that it is easy to work with. Some may argue that the production of wooden furniture leads to a devastating impact on natural resources and encourages deforestation. So, what can be a solution for creators who wish to use wood as building material and customers who prefer buying such furniture? The most valid answer would be minimalistic wooden furniture.
Inspired by the concept of minimalism, Xu Le has designed the Moon chair that not only uses less wood but also offers an ideal solution for smaller living spaces. The Moon chair is a perfect seating furniture for apartments and studios as it takes up very little space.
This ready-to-assemble chair is made using solid wood and incorporates age-old mortise and tenon joinery methods without the need for any fasteners or glues. It takes inspiration from ancient furniture joining techniques used by traditional woodworkers in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
The mortise refers to a hole that perfectly fits a protruding tenon like a lock and key to join two pieces of wood. The Moon chair perfects this technique with exquisite dovetail locks that keep the whole furniture in stable shape.
The design of the Moon chair is truly an example of minimalistic furniture as it uses just the needed amount of wood in its creation. It features three legs, two of which are formed by the extension of the inverted U-shaped backrest in the rear and a front leg that joins with the framework using a dovetail lock.

The seat is made using wood too and mimics the shape of the hollow backrest. A small hole at the top of the backrest allows users to pick and reposition the chair without any hassle or disturbing the assembly.
A’ Design Award winner Moon chair is designed for easy transportation and can be delivered to customers as flat pack furniture. As there are no connectors in this chair, it can be assembled and disassembled with bare hands without the need for any tools. This is a chair design that might draw a lot of enthusiasm among young buyers but might not be an ideal choice for the elderly and those who prefer comfort over minimalistic or space-saving furniture.
