Campus life can get very hectic and expensive. Some students choose to stay on campus in dorms while other prefer to live in off campus apartments. Ethan Liebross, a first year med student, didn’t want to spend money on either of these housing solutions, so he decided to live in his DIY $33K van home. Converting a used 2015 Ford Transit into a full-time mobile home was not an obligation for him but a choice for a better and sustainable lifestyle. He got it for $20,000 from Facebook Marketplace and spent $13,500 on making it into a full-time home.
Ethan has lived in a van home before, but due to the limitation of time and the size of this van, this conversion seemed more challenging than the previous one. After working day and night, and with some help from his dad, he managed to convert it into a cozy home for himself. Equipped with solar panels on the roof and proper electrical system throughout, everything is practical and cleverly designed.
This $33K van home is nothing extravagant; but simple, functional and modern, just how Ethan envisioned it. Its interior gives the feeling of being at home with wood work, lighting, vents, and tiled work. He built a kitchenette with ample storage and a sleeping area to make the inside livable. The passenger seat of the van swivels, making it easy for him to hang out with his friends when they come over.
First is the kitchen area with a butcher block countertop, a sink, and a cooktop for preparing meals. Other than that, he has incorporated the space with tons of storage above and below the countertop. They are useful for storing utensils, cutleries, and every possible kitchen necessity.
The cabinets above the kitchen extends to the sleeping area, making a perfect spot for his books and study materials. His bedroom area is very comfortable and bright with windows, as for him quality sleep is important for better productivity. The bed is integrated with storage to seamlessly house essentials.

One thing that is missing is the bathroom. But that is not a problem at all, as he uses a gym bathroom on campus to take care of his sanitation issues. He is living full-time in this beautiful self-built $33K van home that aligns with his values and vision.
He enjoys the simple and disciplined life that gets even better with the love and support from his parents. Buying a $20,000 used van and turning it into a livable home after spending an amount of $33,460 in total has been the most challenging and rewarding experience for him. But it offers him freedom and flexibility; he doesn’t have to pay rent and he can take his van home to different places on weekends should he feel like it.
