Traveling is one of the best ways to enjoy life; it allows you to meet new people, see new places, and experience new foods and cultures. French native Tom Dewey, a professional trucker, wanted to travel and see the world but needed a perfect vehicle. So, he transformed a van to help him enjoy his weekends and holidays on the road seeing places without having to spend on lodging facilities. Dubbed Koala, his van home has been part of his travel tales for the last two years now.
Dewey bought a Volkswagen Transporter 4 edition van for $5,500 to realize his van life dream. He then spent an additional $4,500 purchasing the materials required to transform the van – with a 1.9-liter engine – into a home on wheels.
Through the transformation, a sink, gas stove, and fridge are installed within a kitchenette to make living on the road easier. An electric pump manages clean water, while power is provided by 200W solar panels on the roof, backed by slow-discharge 800Ah gel batteries.
The Koala van home has a convertible seat that transforms into a queen-size bed to accommodate two adults. The windows have curtains to ensure privacy when parked.
The basic facilities inside are cocooned within a wooden ceiling, flooring, and cabinetry in the kitchen section. A fan has been installed for proper wind flow and to prevent any odor from developing inside the Koala van home. Pocket nets are integrated to keep small important items organized.

Tom has some future upgrades in mind for his van home such as adding an external heater and external batteries that recharge with the movement of the van. It isn’t the most astounding van home out there but it is a budget van conversion for Dewey who continuously shares the memoirs of his journeys on his Instagram page.
