In this bewildering concept of design, something out of the ordinary has been brought forth by Switzerland-based architecture firm, Kosmos Architects. It has introduced an unconventional furniture design called the Dice, which is a hybrid of a chair, a table, a leg bench, and a lamp (it is wireless and independently rechargeable), and sometimes it is nothing at all. Interestingly, it takes a different form every time it is viewed from a different angle. Every side of this quirky furniture tells a story. It is intriguing, innovative, and puzzling all at once. Notably, the Dice by KOSMOS Architects is created as a sample project in collaboration with the Vaults Center for Artistic Production.
Just as a dice has different shades, you roll it and it reveals a different side, the Dice furniture shares a similar characteristic and unveils a confusing yet curious form and shape when you rotate it, which is unprecedented in furniture. The designers have done a brilliant job in crafting this product which encourages users to be creative and imaginative with it. It is giving our imagination a run as well.
The Dice is manufactured using oak wood employing KUKA robotics technology, while the grinding and oiling are done by hand. For the lamp, the designers have used protected frosted glass and plastic.
It features a complicated and classic robotic-made 3D shape. This underlines a perfect blend of modern technology with traditional manufacturing materials like wood, infusing the furniture with playful and serious qualities. However, don’t be deceived by its weirdness, it is still a functional piece of furniture that is proficient in adding a bit of happiness to your space. It is purposely built to be a furniture unit but is intentionally constructed to be an interpretive sculptural piece that demands the user’s attention and channels their inner creativity.

It can be as pragmatic and useful as you make it so. Not to mention how versatile and dynamic it is, just an exemplary item for modern décor collectors and users with an eye for something quirky to add to their living space.
We believe that the Dice by KOSMOS Architects has a chameleon-like aspect. Just like a chameleon changes color depending on the situation, the Dice changes furniture typologies between a stool, a lamp, a table, and a leg bench, or nothing but a sculptural piece; depending on how the users use it and what their interior demands.
Weighing 10.5 kg, and measuring 465 x 465 x 420mm, the Dice is a sample done for an Artistic Production by KOSMOS Architects in collaboration with the Vaults Center. There is no information on whether it will be produced or how it will be priced. It was recently exhibited at the Fake/Authentic Gallery in Milano.
